Marathon de Chinon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The Marathon de Chinon is two identical laps of the wine town on the Vienne, starting and finishing on the Quai Danton below the royal fortress. The course is flat and fast, but running the second lap at the pace of the first takes a clear plan for kilometres 30 to 42.
Course & Elevation
The start is on the Quai Danton on the left bank of the Vienne, directly opposite the fortress. According to the organiser, the loop of just over 21 kilometres takes in vineyard country, a greenway (voie verte), the banks of the Vienne and the medieval old town. There is no real climb: each lap gathers only around 60 to 80 metres of ascent in short rises.
After the first lap the marathon field passes the start again and heads out on the same loop a second time. Because the half marathon starts 50 minutes later on exactly this loop, the second lap is run through a much busier field. The race is a qualifier for the French marathon championships, and pacers run for finish times between 3:00 and 4:30.
The race village sits in the Espace François Rabelais a few metres from the start, where bib pickup and the bag drop are also located. The field across all races is capped at 3,500 runners.
Pacing Strategy
On a flat double loop, evenness decides the race. With both laps sharing the same profile, the first lap is the most honest yardstick: if the half-way split is more than a minute or two under half the target time, the start was too fast.
The real trap arrives with the second lap. Passing the Quai Danton, marathoners run into the half-marathon field, which is fresh and faster, and it is easy to get pulled along. The pacers are the best anchor here. The decisive stretch begins around kilometre 30, when the greenway and riverbank sections come round a second time and wind along the open Vienne is felt more than in the old town.
Training plan for Marathon de Chinon: 12-week build
For most amateur runners the Marathon de Chinon takes between a little over three and five hours. The effort is almost entirely steady and aerobic, with no climbs to break the rhythm or offer a breather.
Training should therefore centre on long runs up to about 30 to 35 kilometres and on marathon-pace blocks placed late in a long run. That rehearses what the second lap demands: holding the same pace on familiar ground with tired legs.
Early April in the Loire valley is usually cool to mild. Winter training should still include fuelling practice on long runs, because a warmer spring day quickly raises fluid needs in the second half. A few sessions on tarmac and firm greenway surfaces prepare for the ground underfoot.
