Zurich Seville Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The Zurich Maratón de Sevilla is the flattest major marathon in Europe: over 92 per cent of the course sits in the flat gradient band, there is not one classified climb, and the whole route lies between six and nineteen metres above sea level. It is run in late February as one big loop through historic Seville, finishing on the Paseo de las Delicias.
Course & Elevation
The start is on the Avenida de María Luisa at the edge of the park of the same name. Within the first kilometre the course runs past the Torre del Oro alongside the Guadalquivir, crosses the Puente de la Barqueta at about kilometre four and heads over the Isla de la Cartuja into Triana. Past the Torre Sevilla and La Maestranza it returns to the centre.
The middle third leaves the postcard city behind and works the wide arteries instead: north past La Macarena and Santa Justa station, then past both big football grounds – the Sánchez-Pizjuán and, shortly after kilometre 30, the Benito Villamarín. These are the broad straight sections where this course produces its times.
The finale returns to the old city. From around kilometre 34 the route runs through the Parque de María Luisa and past the Plaza de España, brushes Las Setas and the Giralda, and comes back down the Avenida de María Luisa to the finish at the Glorieta de Buenos Aires on the Paseo de las Delicias. The course carries the World Athletics Elite Label and sits on the AIMS calendar; for 2027 the organiser is issuing 20,000 bibs, 3,000 more than the year before and a participation record – and the race sold out months in advance.
Pacing Strategy
When a course is this flat there are no excuses left: even splits genuinely work here, and your result depends almost entirely on whether you picked the right pace and held it. Set your target average in advance and run the first five kilometres a second or two above it – the roads along the Guadalquivir are wide and fast, and in a 20,000-strong field the opening pace is always too quick.
The race is decided in the middle third between the two stadiums, roughly from kilometre 25 to 32. That is where the course is most uniform, the field has spread out and there is no terrain to carry your rhythm for you. Keep running evenly there without external prompts and the marathon is yours; lose concentration and you lose minutes.
The two genuine tests are unglamorous and easy to overlook. First, the four crossings of the Guadalquivir – the only rises worth the name on this course, short but noticeable at race pace. Second, the temperature: the race starts in the morning in late February, and Seville can turn considerably warmer by the finish than it feels at the gun. Drink to a plan from the start rather than to thirst.
Training plan for Zurich Seville Marathon: 12-week build
Expect 2:45 to 4:45 as an age-group runner. The demand is as uniform as a marathon gets: one long aerobic block with no climbs, no descents and no recovery whatsoever. That is exactly why this course is both the best place to set a personal best and the least forgiving of a pacing error.
The training emphasis belongs on long runs at goal race pace. Build sessions of 20 to 30 kilometres with a long goal-pace block at the end, so you can still produce race pace after two and a half hours, and add threshold work that sharpens economy at precisely that speed. Hill training plays no part here.
The race-deciding phase runs from kilometre 25 to 35. Rehearse it with progressive long runs whose fastest kilometres sit right at the end, and occasionally run long stretches alone on straight, featureless roads – the mental demand of this course is its monotony, not its gradient.
Two conditions belong in the plan. First the warmth: a late-February date means northern European runners jump straight from winter into a noticeably milder morning – practise drinking on the move and test your race kit for a warmer day than your winter training gave you. Second the surface: the whole course is asphalt with no change of profile, loading the foot identically for 42 kilometres. Long runs on tarmac rather than only on soft forest trails prepare you better for that.
