TotalEnergies Maratón Murcia Costa Cálida.

The TotalEnergies Murcia Costa Cálida Marathon is a two-lap city marathon with a World Athletics Label that finishes at Murcia Cathedral. The course is practically level and known to be fast, with a course record of 2:11:51; what makes it hard is the second lap, which takes different roads from the first and thins the field out. TotalEnergies Murcia Costa Cálida Marathon 2027: Course, Route Profile & Map

The first lap is the half-marathon course: from the start near the Cathedral along long axes through the city, with out-and-back sections to the east, the road beside the river Segura, Avenida Juan Carlos I and the La Pólvora district, up to Plaza Circular. Where the half marathoners turn off to finish, you carry on east along the Ronda de Levante.

According to the course plan the second lap is its own route: a loop by the Palacio de Deportes, the eastern out-and-back and southern loop again, short spurs around km 31 and 32, the river and La Pólvora once more, then the Ronda Norte in the north-west between km 38 and 41 before the run down through the city to the Cathedral. The measurement certificate for the shared course gives altitudes between 38 and 42 metres: there are no climbs, only bridges and underpasses.

It is a big event: over 11,000 people ran across three distances in 2026, 6,000 marathon places are planned for 2027, and the finish sits in the historic centre, which the organiser itself gives as a reason for dropping the 10K. The time limit has been extended to six hours.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace TotalEnergies Murcia Costa Cálida Marathon.

Start

Start under control

On a level two-lap course even pacing is the whole strategy. In the first lap you run with the half marathoners, who are racing 21 km: their pace is tempting and too fast for you. The marathon is decided in the second lap from the Ronda de Levante onwards.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The field thins, the roads are new, and several turnarounds and spurs break your rhythm. Take the turns smoothly, find groups on the long straights by the river, and keep something for the Ronda Norte between km 38 and 41, the last big arc before the run to the Cathedral.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap is a half-way split that is too fast because you were pulled along by the shorter race.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for TotalEnergies Murcia Costa Cálida Marathon: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

For age-group runners this is three to six hours of steady aerobic work; you must reach half-way within 2 hours 45. Climbing strength is irrelevant; pace endurance over the full distance is everything.

Core

Train race pace

The decisive part is the second lap, with few runners around you and many changes of direction. Build long runs to 32-35 km with marathon-pace blocks in the final third, and run some of them alone so you can hold pace without a group.

Specific

Rehearse the course

An early-February date puts your build-up in winter. Plan fallbacks for bad-weather weeks so the long runs do not fall away, and use tune-up races to practise starting in a big field.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Turnarounds cost more time on this course than any hill. Strides and short changes of pace help you get back to marathon pace quickly after each turn.
