Despite the name, the Maratona della Valle Intrasca is not a marathon but a trail race for pairs over just under 34 km, starting and finishing in Intra. Its core is one climb of more than 1,000 metres around halfway, and that climb, plus the long way back down, is what the two of you prepare for.
The race starts and finishes on Piazza Ranzoni in Intra, a town square in Verbania at a little over 200 metres, and goes from there to almost 1,500 metres and back. The first fifth of the loop gains only about 100 metres. Then a first steep ramp lifts you to around 540 metres, and a good part of that is given straight back before the real mountain has even started.
That mountain is the race. From just over 400 metres the climb runs for nearly eight kilometres to the high point, averaging almost 15 percent with no real break. A short counter-climb follows at the top, and then the course drops for more than ten kilometres, almost without interruption, back to the valley. The closing stretch is close to flat and ends in Intra again.
That you cover all of this as a pair shapes the day as much as the vertical does. The event reaches its 51st edition, and in 2026 it hosted the Italian skyrun pairs championship.
| Start | Length | Ø | Max. | Gain | Cat. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| km 4.5 | 1.2 km | 4.2 % | 7.5 % | +49 m | — |
| km 6.8 | 2.1 km | 10.6 % | 23.7 % | +224 m | Cat. 3 |
| km 9.8 | 7.7 km | 14.6 % | 28.9 % | +1,118 m | HC |

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
Nearly half the course is steep, up and down alike, and you are managing two athletes rather than one. So treat the flat kilometres out of Intra as a warm-up and take the first ramp deliberately below race effort. There is little time to win there, and whatever strength you spend is missing on the mountain.
The race is decided on the long climb. At this gradient most runners hike large parts of it, and that is the plan rather than a setback: find a strong, even hiking rhythm that the weaker climber of the two can hold to the top. Agree beforehand who sets the pace, because misjudging your partner's day here costs you for well over an hour.
The biggest trap comes after the high point. At first the descent feels like recovery, but over more than ten kilometres every hard landing adds up in the quads. Run it too fast and you will have nothing left for the flat stretch into Intra, exactly where time would still be easy to gain.

Expect around 4:30 to 6 hours depending on your level. This is a long aerobic effort in two distinct halves: first sustained climbing at a high heart rate and a low speed, then a long eccentric load on the legs. Hard surges barely matter here, while the duration of the pressure on the climb matters a great deal.
The key session is therefore the long uphill block. Build workouts of 45 to 60 minutes of unbroken climbing on steep ground, mixing brisk hiking and running and holding the rhythm without stopping. If no mountain that long is close to home, repeats on a shorter steep hill or an inclined treadmill can replace part of it.
Downhill running on tired legs matters just as much. Put long descents at the end of your climbing days, build their volume carefully over several weeks, and add a few flat kilometres afterwards. That teaches your legs the exact sequence that decides the closing stage on race day.
Do some of your long runs together, so that you know before the start how far apart you are uphill and downhill. The 6 June date puts the main block of preparation in spring, so find steep ground early. Use these sessions to practise eating and drinking on the move as well, because across several hours of climbing and descending it is part of the race.
