Media City Half Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The Media City Half Marathon starts and finishes on the MediaCityUK piazza in Salford and runs on closed roads around Salford Quays and out towards Eccles in late February. The course is flat and fast, loops through the docklands twice, and suits a spring-opener personal-best attempt.
Course & Elevation
From the square in front of the TV studios the route first heads west on the Quays' roads. The first lap is the longer one: between about km 4.4 and 7 it adds an out-and-back towards Eccles before the course returns to the water and passes Media City. The second lap follows the same corridor around the Quays without that detour and finishes back on the piazza.
Elevation barely matters. The profile stays between about 19 and 32 m, and the roughly 120 m of ascent come from many short undulations – ramps up to bridges and waterside paths rather than real hills. There are no steep sections.
The race's character comes from the setting: wide roads between glass façades, open stretches along the former dock basins, footpaths by the water and an event village right at the start. Because the loop passes the venue twice, spectators see runners more than once. In late February, expect cold, wind off the water and rain in Salford.
Pacing Strategy
On this course no climb dictates the pace – what matters is how evenly you run. Settle into goal pace from the first kilometre and keep the effort constant over the small bridge ramps rather than holding speed on them.
The section that decides the race is the second lap from about km 12. By then you know the course, the field has spread out, and the wind across the open dock basins costs more when you run alone than in a group.
The biggest trap is the halfway pass by the event village: spectators and the nearby finish invite a surge while nine kilometres remain. Find a group for headwind stretches along the water and save your reserves for the last three kilometres.
Training plan for Media City Half Marathon: 12-week build
For most age-group runners the Media City Half Marathon takes between about 1:30 and 2:30 – a steady effort just below threshold, with no climbs to break up pace and heart rate.
Because the course is flat, your ability to hold an even pace for a long time decides the result. Build in threshold runs of 20 to 40 minutes and intervals at half-marathon pace, and put race-pace blocks into long runs of 16 to 20 kilometres.
The second lap is the test: practise running the last kilometres of long runs at or slightly faster than goal pace on tired legs. Short strides help you stay relaxed over the bridge ramps.
The build falls in December, January and February. Plan for cold, wind and darkness, train in the kit you intend to race in, and rehearse warming up in low temperatures.
