The race starts in waves on the A56 Bridgewater Way, right beside the event village on the Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground. From there the loop runs north past the Old Trafford football stadium before turning south through Stretford. It is a loop course: the finish is on Talbot Road, a few hundred metres from the start.

The middle third is the quietest part of the race. Between kilometre nine and thirteen the route reaches its southernmost point on the edge of Sale and Brooklands before swinging back north through Chorlton. There is effectively no climbing here – the whole profile sits inside a band of about twelve metres, 91 per cent of the course registers as flat, and less than one storey separates the highest point from the lowest.

The character of this race therefore comes from the crowd rather than the terrain. More than 28,000 people ran the 2025 edition and 31,000 registered for 2026; the roads through Trafford, Stretford and Chorlton are lined the whole way on a Sunday morning. The closing stretch back to Talbot Road is deliberately long and flat – those final kilometres exist to be run fast.

Pacing Strategy

On a course without hills there is no terrain to regulate pace for you. This is an uninterrupted threshold run, and the split has to be managed entirely from the head: even kilometre splits from the gun, with a deliberate buffer over the first three kilometres.

The trap sits exactly there, at the start. The waves are big, the A56 is wide and fast, and the combination of fresh legs, a dense field and flat tarmac reliably produces an opening five-kilometre split ten to fifteen seconds per kilometre quicker than the realistic target. On a flat course there is no descent later that pays the error back.

What decides the race instead is the stretch from kilometre fourteen to eighteen on the way back through Chorlton. It is exactly as flat as everything before it, but it arrives when the monotony has begun to bite and no change of terrain is left to break it up. A runner who was disciplined until then can shift to goal pace here and use the last flat kilometres into Talbot Road. Four drink stations sit on the course, with gels only at stations two and three – everything else has to be carried.

For a competitive age-group runner the half takes roughly 80 to 130 minutes. The demand is that of a pure tempo run: steadily aerobic at or just under threshold, with no climbs, no descents and nothing technical. The uniformity is the challenge – there is not one point on this course where the rhythm changes by itself.

What decides the race is the ability to hold cadence and ground-contact time steady through the second half as fatigue builds. Because no hill ever loads the legs differently, a flat half marathon fatigues the same structures monotonously for ninety minutes, and the only way to train that is to do it.

Conditions are the second factor. Early October in Manchester means cool, damp air and a real chance of rain, and much of the course runs on open arterial roads with no shelter. Wet-road sessions and a shoe-and-kit combination already tested in the rain belong in the build-up, as does deciding in advance whether a singlet is really the right call at ten degrees and drizzle.

The training emphases follow: threshold work and race-pace specificity rather than hill strength. Tempo runs of twenty to forty-five minutes, long runs finished with eight to twelve kilometres at goal rhythm, and at least two sessions that rehearse the wave-start effect – starting more controlled than it feels and only lifting the pace after twenty minutes.
