Hyundai Mitja Marató Barcelona by Brooks: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Hyundai Mitja Marató Barcelona by Brooks is the city's big February half marathon: 21.1 kilometres as a closed loop from the Passeig Picasso through the centre and along the coast. Two thirds of the course sits in the flat gradient band and there is not one classified climb – and with thirty pacers covering ten target times, the race is deliberately built for personal bests.

Course & Elevation

The start is on the Passeig Picasso at the edge of the Parc de la Ciutadella, released in waves by declared finishing time. The course is a pure city loop: through the centre and along the Mediterranean coast, entirely on closed roads, finishing back where it began.

The profile stays in a narrow band between roughly five and forty metres above sea level. Around 66 per cent of the course is flat, some sixteen per cent each rises and falls gently, and the profile classifies not one climb. Over 21.35 measured kilometres it gathers around 110 metres – a course with no test in it, but no recovery either.

The race is the sister event of the Zurich Marató Barcelona and is run by the same combination of city council and RPM Sports. Thirty pacers cover ten target times from 1:20 to 2:05, which says plainly what the course is for: the organisers call it one of the most complete half marathons on the international calendar, and February gives the field cool conditions that suit fast times.

Pacing Strategy

A course with no classified climbs moves the whole task onto choosing your pace. Set your target average in advance and deliberately run the first two kilometres a second or two above it – despite the staggered waves the Passeig Picasso and the opening streets stay tight, and weaving costs real metres on a measured course.

Because the terrain does nothing for you, the middle section is simply a matter of concentration. All the small rises and falls add up to a good hundred metres without any single one being noticeable – run to even effort rather than the watch alone, and use the thirty pacers: on a course this uniform, a group at your target time is worth more than any tactic of your own.

Conditions are the real variable. The coastal sections run open beside the Mediterranean, and a February wind there costs more time than any gradient on this profile. Stay in a group for those kilometres. And expect cold at the start: a mid-February morning in Barcelona is markedly cooler than the rest of the day suggests.

Training plan for Hyundai Mitja Marató Barcelona by Brooks: 12-week build

Expect 1:20 to 2:20 as an age-group runner – exactly the range the thirty pacers cover. The demand is one continuous block at or just below threshold, with no climbs to break the rhythm and no section in which to recover.

The training emphasis is unambiguously threshold work and running economy: tempo runs of 20 to 40 minutes at or just under goal pace, plus long runs of 90 to 120 minutes with a brisk final third. Hill training plays no part here.

Because practically the whole course rises or falls slightly without ever getting steep, training on gently rolling city terrain rather than the flattest available loop pays off – it makes the constant micro-undulation a habit on race day rather than a disruption.

Two conditions belong in the preparation. First the coastal wind: run tempo sessions into a headwind regularly and practise running in a group, because that is what decides your finishing time here. Second the February date – for northern European runners it falls in midwinter, and the specific sessions have to be run in the cold. Test your race kit for a chilly start and a milder middle.
