Life Time Miami Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Life Time Miami Marathon is one of the flattest big marathons anywhere: forty-two kilometres at sea level on which the only climbing of the day comes from four bridges. It is still not decided by the legs but by how you handle a subtropical morning that starts at 06:00 in the dark and finishes in the sun.

Course & Elevation

The start is at 06:00 at 601 Biscayne Boulevard in front of the Kaseya Center, home of the Miami Heat; the later corrals are away by 06:45 and nobody starts after 07:00. The course heads north and then over the MacArthur Causeway - at nine metres above sea level the highest point of the entire race, reached within the first four hundred metres - past PortMiami and its cruise ships to Watson Island. At mile 2.5 comes the second rise, across onto Miami Beach, then up Ocean Drive and back to the mainland over the Venetian Causeway between miles eight and eleven.

From there marathon and half go their separate ways. The marathon runs south through Brickell and Coconut Grove towards the Rickenbacker Causeway and finally returns up Biscayne Boulevard to the finish at 301 Biscayne Boulevard beside Bayfront Park. Twice, at miles 13.2 and 25.5, it crosses the South Miami Avenue bridge - both short, gentle rises and, with the two causeways, the only gradient the course has. The total is 58 metres of climbing over 42.5 kilometres, with 94 per cent of the route flat.

The course is USATF-certified, a single loop and a Boston qualifier; the field is capped at 18,000 across the marathon and half together. What sets Miami apart from other flat marathons is the setting and the hour: the first hour and a half runs in darkness over open water crossings, sunrise falls in the Ocean Drive section, and the closing hours are already in the day's heat. The seven-hour limit is stated bluntly - after it, aid stations, marshals, medical support and cross-street protection are withdrawn.

Pacing Strategy

On a course that is 94 per cent flat there is no climb to hold you back and no descent to hand recovery back. Pace is therefore purely a decision from kilometre one, and the hardest one comes right at the front: the MacArthur Causeway arrives after four hundred metres, in the densest field of the day, and is the only rise that counts at all. Run over it at race pace and you have taken the highest load spike of the race in your first minute.

The real opponent is humidity. A 06:00 start at sea level in the subtropics means heavy air and very little evaporative cooling, January or not; the water crossings are open and windy, the street sections between them are not. Drink to a plan from the beginning rather than to thirst, and expect heart rate to drift slowly upward at the same pace over the distance - that is normal and not a reason to force it.

The race is decided after mile thirteen. That is where the half turns off, and the marathon thins out abruptly and quietens on its way through Brickell and Coconut Grove - just as the sun comes up, with the last two hours the warmest of the day. If you have ridden the very large shared field until then, this is where you pay. The final South Miami Avenue bridge at mile 25.5 is objectively harmless and is remembered by a lot of finishers as the hardest climb of the day.

Training plan for Life Time Miami Marathon: 12-week build

For age-group runners the Miami Marathon is a three to just under seven hour effort; the seven-hour limit works out at sixteen minutes per mile, or ten per kilometre. The demand is a steady aerobic one with no anaerobic component at all - physiologically the simplest kind of marathon, with one extra variable: heat.

Which is exactly why heat belongs in the training. Arrive from a European winter and race day presents conditions that never occur at home during the build. Some of the long runs should therefore be done under raised heat load - overdressed, indoors, or on a treadmill with the window shut - and over several weeks, not in the last one. The drinking strategy needs rehearsing with it: over six hours in high humidity, fluid and sodium intake is not a detail.

The running-specific emphasis is steady race-pace endurance. Long runs with thirty to sixty minutes at marathon pace in the final third, plus threshold runs of twenty to forty minutes, both on ground as flat as you can find. Hill training pays nothing back here; on a course with 58 metres of climbing there is nothing to prepare the legs for.

The last condition is the clock. A 06:00 start means getting up in the middle of the night, breakfast hours before the effort, and the first hour and a half in the dark, part of it on open bridges. That can be rehearsed: a few long runs before sunrise, with the same breakfast and the same timings as race day, remove exactly the unknowns you would otherwise discover at 05:00 on the morning itself.
