Space Coast Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Space Coast Marathon, which its organiser calls the oldest marathon in Florida and which celebrates its 55th year in 2026, follows the Indian River from Cocoa Village north and south along the waterfront. It is flat and fast, a USATF certified Boston qualifier, with space-themed aid stations and a finish back at Cocoa Riverfront Park.

Course & Elevation

The race starts in the historic centre of Cocoa Village at Cocoa Riverfront Park. The marathon first runs north on Indian River Drive to a turnaround and back towards Cocoa Village, then continues south along the river and joins the half marathon course on Rockledge Drive for the second half, before finishing at Harrison Street by the riverfront park.

Almost the whole course runs beside the Indian River lagoon, partly shaded by trees, and the profile is practically flat: the road never rises more than a few metres, and our elevation model reads under 100 metres of total ascent over the full distance, most of it small undulations. Being an out-and-back course, it lets runners see the field coming the other way. Each edition carries a space mission as its theme, and the 2026 field was sold out months before race day.

Pacing Strategy

With no hills to manage, this is a course for even splits. Start at goal pace, not faster, and let the early-morning cool carry you through the first half.

The real variables are heat and wind. Even in late November Florida can warm up quickly after sunrise, and the open river road is exposed to breeze on the turnaround legs. Plan to slow slightly if it warms up, and tuck in behind other runners when running into the wind.

Training plan for Space Coast Marathon: 12-week build

A flat marathon rewards pace discipline and aerobic strength. Build long runs up to 30 to 35 kilometres and include marathon-pace segments of 10 to 20 kilometres late in those runs.

Because the course is so flat, the same muscles work for three or four hours without relief; steady long runs on flat roads prepare them for that. Practise your fuelling and drinking in warm conditions if you can, and get used to early starts, since the marathon begins at 6 a.m.
