Course & Elevation
The gun goes at 07:00 on the south side of the Baird Center on Wisconsin Avenue, in the middle of downtown, together with the half marathon. The opening kilometres head north through the East Side - Prospect Avenue, Lafayette Place, Terrace Avenue, Wahl Avenue - and up onto the bluff into Lake Park, the high point of the course. From there Lincoln Memorial Drive takes the route back south right along the water.
At about mile 7.5 comes the Hoan Bridge. It is the only real gradient of the day: a long, steady ramp up onto the deck and an equally long run off the far side, with the view over the lake and the skyline the race is known for. After it come the Bay View blocks - Oklahoma, Kinnickinnic, Morgan, Illinois, Rhode Island, Superior - and the long southern leg through St. Francis and Cudahy on South Lake Drive as far as College Avenue. On the way back the Hoan is crossed a second time before Iron Street, Russell Avenue and Carferry Drive lead to the finish at Urban Park.
Bridge aside, this is a flat course: 71 per cent of it sits in the flat gradient band, the whole race adds up to 187 metres of ascent, and more than 40 per cent of the route runs directly along Lake Michigan. The marathon is staged by the Badgerland Striders running club under a 'For Runners, By Runners' banner; 2026 is the 44th edition and doubles as the Wisconsin RRCA Marathon Championship, with the field capped at 2,500.
Pacing Strategy
On a course that is 71 per cent flat, the terrain does not regulate your pace for you. The race's only structure is the two Hoan crossings at roughly mile 7.5 and mile 23.5 - and they sit about as awkwardly as they could: the first while you still feel fresh, the second when there is nothing left.
The first ramp is the trap. It comes early, it is plainly visible, and the pull of the field carries you up it; heart rate then does not drop straight back down. Take it at race pace rather than race effort and you pay for it not on the bridge but thirty kilometres later at the very same place. The checkpoint helps you calibrate: you must be on the bridge by 09:15, which is an 18-minute mile - plenty of room for anybody not overcooking it.
The race is decided between the Cudahy turnaround and the second Hoan approach. That stretch runs on open lakeshore, usually into wind, and it is the most monotonous part of the course. Fall apart alone there and you lose more time than on any ramp. Then the bridge comes round again at mile 23.5, with a hard 13:00 cutoff at its south end - which is where it becomes clear how honestly the first ten miles were run.

The central preparation theme is therefore marathon pace held for a long time. Long runs with extended blocks at goal pace fit the demand better than short fast intervals. And because the course is one big loop with a turnaround, so you see the same roads twice, it is worth deliberately running out-and-back routes in training rather than only circuits.
The decisive parts are the second bridge ramp and the twenty kilometres before it. For the ramp, one to two minute moderate climbs at marathon effort are enough, placed at the end of long runs rather than the start - the point is not the gradient but picking the pace back up at the top on tired legs. The time pressure there is real: miss the south end of the bridge and you are taken off the course, because the Hoan is not a pedestrian structure and has to reopen to traffic.
The lake sets the conditions. In early October the shoreline is markedly cooler than the city, and the long southern leg on South Lake Drive is completely exposed to wind off the water. A few long sessions into a headwind and on cold mornings are the most useful preparation, together with a clothing choice that covers a start in single-figure temperatures and a finish in midday sun.
