CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon is one of the flattest big marathons in the United States: 103 metres of climbing over 42.9 kilometres, not a single rise that deserves the name, and a start and finish in the middle of downtown Indianapolis. Almost everyone who lines up here is chasing a time, which makes the preparation a question of race-pace durability and pacing discipline rather than hill work.

Course & Elevation

The race starts on West Street beside the Indiana Convention Center. The opening kilometres loop south and east through the Wholesale District before the course takes downtown head-on: a lap of Monument Circle around the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, then out to the north-east along Massachusetts Avenue and 10th Street. Around 48 right-angle corners are spread over the distance, a large share of them in this street grid.

From kilometre 12 the course turns long and straight. Pennsylvania Street and Fall Creek Parkway run north past the Indiana State Fairgrounds between miles 8 and 9, then on via 38th Street, Washington Boulevard and College Avenue to Broad Ripple and Warfleigh on the White River. The way back is Meridian Street, passing Butler University and the Newfields art museum. The profile rises almost imperceptibly along the way: barely twenty metres between kilometre 24 and the high point at kilometre 30.

What follows is the only real piece of terrain all day, a loss of about twenty metres down to the White River. The last ten kilometres run the parkways along the White River and Fall Creek back into the city with essentially no elevation change, and finish on West Washington Street in front of the Indiana Statehouse. Everything is asphalt on closed streets, and the gun goes at eight in the morning on the first Saturday in November, usually in the cold.

Pacing Strategy

86.5 per cent of the course sits under one per cent of gradient and there is no climb in any meaningful sense. An even race pace from the first mile to the last is the obvious plan, and it also makes the course unforgiving: no ramp forces you to back off, no descent hands you speed. The wave start from A to F, assigned by the finish time you entered, helps you settle into the right group from the gun.

The race is decided between kilometre 24 and 31. There the profile lifts twenty metres over six kilometres, too little to feel like a climb but enough to cost a few seconds per kilometre on tiring legs. Hold race pace on the way back down Meridian Street and the short drop to the White River plus the flat parkway kilometres will carry you home under control.

The real trap, though, is at the front. The first ten kilometres through downtown are flat, the field is dense and the air is cold, and under those conditions a pace that is too quick feels effortless. Cold also hides how much you need to drink: water and electrolytes are at every aid station, gels near miles 10.5, 15.5 and 22. Slower runners have the cut-off to plan for as well, seven hours at a minimum of 16 minutes per mile, with the split between miles 7 and 8 to be reached by 10:25.

Training plan for CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon: 12-week build

For an age-group runner the effort lasts somewhere between three and five hours. Its character is pure, even aerobic work: over 42 kilometres no section loads the legs differently from the one before, there is no climb to switch gears on and no long descent to recover on. That is exactly what makes the course fast, and it puts a high demand on muscular fatigue resistance.

Prepare specifically for the stretch between kilometre 24 and 31. Long runs with marathon race-pace blocks in the final third address that demand far better than tempo work at the start of a session. The short drop to the White River arrives at kilometre 30 and lands on already tired quadriceps, so a few sessions with gently descending race-pace segments pay off, as does running on hard asphalt rather than only on soft ground.

The first Saturday in November in Indiana means a cold, usually dry morning and an eight o'clock start. Plan the warm-up and the clothing around that: the organiser plans for discarded hats, gloves and layers in the start area and along the course, and every entry includes a finisher beanie. Practising drinking in low temperatures belongs in the training as well, because cold removes the thirst but not the need.

The priorities follow straight from the course: marathon race pace over long distances, threshold work for the speed reserve behind it, and running economy on flat asphalt. Add pacing discipline, because on a course with no terrain nothing external prompts you to correct your speed; the control has to come from your head and your watch.
