The MO' Cowbell Marathon starts and finishes in Frontier Park on the Missouri in St. Charles and comes in two halves: a loop through the old town and New Town with the day's only hills, and a long, flat out-and-back along the river. It is a Boston qualifier, built for even pacing.
The start is at 7:30 on Riverfront Drive, in six corrals by planned pace. The first half heads north through the historic centre of St. Charles, out along River Road and Highway 94 into the New Town district with its lakes, and back via Boschertown Road. The organiser describes the course as flat for nearly ten miles before a hilly stretch of about two miles on the Little Hills Expressway. Via N 5th Street the route returns to Frontier Park at halfway.
The second half is an out-and-back to the south on Arena Parkway and the Katy Trail, the former railway line along the Missouri, to the turnaround on the Creve Coeur Connector Path at mile 19.3. The same way leads back to the finish by the river.
The course adds up to about 145 metres of climbing, but it stays within a narrow band of elevation near the river. Water and Gatorade are at twelve stations, with gels at miles 7.25 and 14.5. The time limit is 6.5 hours at a 15-minute-mile pace, and the finish closes at 2 p.m.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
The first half is the harder one. On the flat opening ten miles to New Town it is tempting to bank time for the hills. Don't: run your target pace and take the two rolling miles on the Little Hills Expressway at the same effort, even if the pace drops there.
The marathon is decided on the out-and-back to the south. After halfway at Frontier Park come more than six miles of flat, straight running with little to break it up before the turnaround at mile 19.3, and this is where a controlled start pays off. Use the clocks at halfway and the turnaround as checkpoints.
The trap is the way back. On an out-and-back you can see the distance ahead, and the last seven miles on the same path feel longer than the same stretch going out.

Expect roughly 3:30 to 5:45 depending on ability; the time limit is 6.5 hours. The demand is mostly steady aerobic running, with a rolling section in the middle of the first half and long, monotonous straights in the second.
Two abilities decide it: handling short rises without a pace collapse afterwards, and holding marathon pace on the flat miles after halfway. Long runs of 28 to 32 kilometres with marathon pace in the second half are the key session, supplemented by rolling terrain in the middle of long runs.
Practise the turnaround as well: slow from marathon pace, turn and get going again without losing rhythm. On the Katy Trail part of the race runs on a former railway path rather than asphalt, and a long run on similar ground shows you how that affects your shoes and stride.
The start is at 7:30 in early November. Test your kit for a cool morning and the wait in the corral, and plan your fuelling around the stations, which come roughly every two to two and a half miles.
