The 8K Monumental is the Mura Urban Trail with the door held open: a non-competitive night run inside Verona's city walls, in a UNESCO heritage setting, and almost entirely flat. One short rise sits at halfway; the shift between asphalt and unpaved paths and running in the dark will ask more of you.
For a little over four kilometres the loop barely changes height, easing down from around 65 to just under 60 metres. Shortly after kilometre 4 comes the one climb of the evening: a little over 400 metres at just under five percent. It costs about 20 metres of ascent and is quickly over.
At the top of that ramp the routes part. The two longer distances keep climbing; you drop back down and stay close to level through the second half until the loop closes where it began. Around four fifths of the course is flat, and the total comes to only 36 metres of ascent.
What sets this run apart is the place and the hour. You are out at night inside Verona's walls, in a UNESCO heritage setting, moving between asphalt and unpaved sections. That turns eight flat kilometres into a genuine urban trail without demanding any mountain experience. The medical and registration requirements of the 16K and 30K do not apply here.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
There is no race to win on this loop, so no reason to rush the opening kilometres. They will tempt you anyway: level, if anything very slightly downhill, and you arrive at them fresh. Settle into a pace at which you could still hold a conversation and carry it to the foot of the rise.
That rise only becomes a test if you take it at flat-road pace. Shorten your stride, let your breathing climb a little and treat those two or three minutes as deliberately easy. The drop on the far side hands your breath straight back, and about three flat kilometres then remain.
The bigger trap is the ground in the dark. On unpaved passages you see less of what lies beneath you at night, and a step you would take without thinking in daylight suddenly costs concentration. Ease off there instead of defending a time: with nothing competitive at stake, no split is worth the risk.

Regular runners will be out for about 40 to 60 minutes, more relaxed ones correspondingly longer. The effort is steady and aerobic, broken only by that one short rise at halfway. What this asks for is neither hill sessions nor very long runs, just the ability to run easily for an hour without stopping.
So build one weekly steady run until 60 minutes feels comfortable, and add a second, shorter run alongside it. In the final weeks, place a hill of two or three minutes in the middle of a run, jog up it and carry straight on along the flat. It teaches you how quickly your breathing settles after a climb, which is exactly the moment you meet after kilometre 5.
Two conditions are worth practising on purpose. Take some runs onto paths without asphalt, so the change of surface does not surprise you and shorter, more attentive steps become normal. Two or three sessions should also happen after dark, because distances and speed feel different at night than they do by day.
The late start in June needs a little planning as well. You will be running at an hour when your working day is long over, with a whole day already in your legs. Try out once or twice what you eat in the late afternoon and when, so you reach the line neither hungry nor full.
