North Lincolnshire Half Marathon & 10k: Course, Route Profile & Map

The North Lincolnshire Half Marathon starts and finishes at Quibell Park Stadium in Scunthorpe and runs a single lap on closed roads out into the flat Lincolnshire countryside in early March. There is almost no climbing to speak of, which makes it a course for an even, early-season personal best.

Course & Elevation

From the stadium on Brumby Wood Lane the route leaves Scunthorpe on closed roads. It is one big lap, not an out-and-back and not a double loop: you see every stretch once and only come back to the stadium, where the event village stands, at the very end.

The terrain is about as flat as northern England gets. The course stays between roughly 1 and 15 m above sea level, and the barely 70 m of ascent over 21 kilometres come as undulations you will hardly notice. The high point is not out in the countryside but on the way back into town just before the finish.

The character comes from roads through fields and open country rather than crowd-lined streets. Water is roughly every 5 km, toilets about halfway, and every kilometre is marked with a flag. Early March in Lincolnshire means cool and often windy, with no shelter on the open sections. Road closures set a three-hour time limit.

Pacing Strategy

Because the profile dictates nothing, the wind decides your race. Run the first kilometres out of the stadium deliberately into goal pace; the 10k field started half an hour earlier, so you share the road only with your own race.

On the open stretches out in the countryside it pays to find a group and to run by effort rather than by the watch into a headwind. Seconds forced there are paid back double in the second half.

The last kilometres back into Scunthorpe rise very slightly, a dozen metres or so at most. It is not a hill, but you feel it on tired legs. Hold the effort steady there rather than forcing the pace, and spend your last reserves only once the stadium is in sight.

Training plan for North Lincolnshire Half Marathon & 10k: 12-week build

For most age-group runners the half marathon takes between about 1:30 and 2:30, a steady effort just below threshold with no climbs to break the rhythm.

On a course this flat, what counts is how long you can hold a constant pace. Build around threshold runs of 20 to 40 minutes, intervals at half-marathon pace and long runs of 16 to 20 kilometres with race-pace blocks.

Practise running by feel into a headwind: put some tempo segments on open, exposed roads and hold the effort there rather than the pace. That prepares you for the country roads around Scunthorpe better than any track session.

The build falls in December, January and February. Train in cold and darkness, test your race kit in the wind, and plan your warm-up at the stadium on a cold March morning.
