Klingenthal Salzkotten Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Klingenthal Salzkotten Marathon runs four times around the same ten-and-a-half kilometre loop through the salt town of Salzkotten and its district of Verne. At roughly 25 metres of climbing per lap it is one of the flattest marathons in eastern Westphalia. The task here is not the terrain but the discipline of running four identical laps at one steady pace.

Course & Elevation

The gun goes at 8:30 in the morning at the Bürgerturm on the corner of Marktstraße and Oelweg, together with the half marathon field. The loop leaves the town centre, runs out along country roads to the village of Verne and comes back into town. Four of these laps make the marathon; the recorded track measures about 43.4 kilometres against the advertised 42.195, and the course is officially measured to IWR and DLO standards with the certificate valid to the end of 2028.

The elevation band runs from 91 to just over 100 metres above sea level and the full distance adds up to little more than 100 metres of climbing. Around ninety percent of the route is flat, there is not a single climb worth the name, and equally there is no descent on which to recover. If you slow down here it is fatigue, not the terrain.

Salzkotten is a salt town and the race leans into it: the main feed zone and the massage area sit at the Sälzer graduation tower, only 170 metres past the finish line in the town centre. On course there is water every 2.5 kilometres and isotonic drink plus bananas every 5. The through-roads are closed from around 6:30 until 16:00, and residents host a front-garden fan party along the route. In 2026 the race drew 3,490 starters, the first time it passed 3,000.

Pacing Strategy

On a course without climbs, evenness is the whole strategy. A marathon made of four identical laps tempts you to run the first one too fast in the slipstream of the half marathon field, because the flat profile feels easy and the runners around you only have half the distance to cover. Pick a first-lap pace that feels too slow and hold it.

The race is decided on lap three. By then the novelty is gone, the field is strung out, and you are mostly running the same streets alone. Anyone who starts doing mental arithmetic here loses more time than any hill would cost. Break the lap into its landmarks, the edge of town, Verne, the return into the centre, and run from one to the next.

The biggest trap is warmth. The marathon starts early, but in early June the open stretches between the town and Verne can heat up by the last two laps, and the cut-off is not until 14:30. Drink from the first feed station rather than when thirst arrives. Pacemakers run target times from 3:45 to 4:30.

Training plan for Klingenthal Salzkotten Marathon: 12-week build

For a typical age-group runner the effort here lasts somewhere between 3:15 and 5:00 hours. The demand is pure, uninterrupted aerobic endurance: no climb to lift the heart rate, no descent to unload the legs, just four and a half hours of the same movement pattern and the same muscular load. That monotony is the challenge, and only volume answers it.

The race is decided between kilometre 25 and 35, which is lap three and the start of lap four. Prepare for it with long runs of at least 30 kilometres whose second half finishes at planned marathon pace. A flat course punishes inefficient running form more than a rolling one does, because there are no changes of gradient behind which fatigue can hide.

Conditions are the second training priority. A marathon on the first Sunday in June with a 14:30 cut-off means the closing kilometres are run at noticeably higher temperatures than the start. Schedule some long sessions in midday heat during the spring and practise the drinking pattern you will use in the race, water every 2.5 kilometres and isotonic drink every 5.

Because the course is entirely on asphalt, part of your long running should also be on hard surfaces so that calves and Achilles tendons are ready for the uniform loading. Add tempo runs of 10 to 15 kilometres at marathon pace, which build the feel for holding one speed without any help from the terrain.
