South Downs Half Marathon.

The South Downs Half Marathon runs a little long at 13.5 miles and is trail almost from end to end: out of Eastbourne along the South Downs Way, through Friston Forest and back over Beachy Head. The ground is easy to run on but rarely level, so good preparation centres on the long ascent in the final third.

South Downs Half Marathon 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

Start and finish are at Helen Garden in Eastbourne, with a single loop through the South Downs National Park in between. The first stretch follows the South Downs Way and opens with the steepest ground of the day: from kilometre 0.6 you gain around 100 metres in little more than a kilometre. The path then keeps rising in small waves to the high point of 190 metres just after kilometre 6, before giving back almost 120 metres on the way towards Friston Forest.

Ninety-nine per cent of the race is trail, on grass, farm tracks and forest paths, with barely any tarmac. None of it is technical, which keeps this a running race rather than a scramble. Woodland paths arrive in the middle section, and from kilometre 8 three climbs follow, each under a kilometre long. The only aid station is at East Dean at mile 8.27, almost exactly at the foot of the third.

Beyond East Dean the course heads towards the Seven Sisters and bottoms out at about 20 metres at kilometre 15.6. From there it climbs with hardly a break to nearly 160 metres at kilometre 19.5, with the longest ascent of the race starting at kilometre 17. The way home leads over Beachy Head, and the last two kilometres drop in one go, steeply at the end, down into Eastbourne.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace South Downs Half Marathon.

Start

Start under control

Only about an eighth of this course is level, so a target pace is useless here. Run by effort, and accept that the ramp at kilometre 0.6 arrives before you have warmed up: walk its steepest metres rather than spiking your heart rate in the first ten minutes. Because the ground is not technical, you can let go on the descents and over the waves of the first ridge, which is where time comes cheaply.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The race is decided between kilometres 15.6 and 19.5. Nearly 140 metres of continuous gain would not be much on its own, but it comes after seven climbs and as many descents have worked your thighs. Still running rather than walking here gains more time in four kilometres than any other stretch of the course.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap sits at East Dean. Thirteen kilometres without support tempt you to gulp a drink and rush straight back out, yet the next climb starts right behind the station. Take your time, eat, and walk the first metres uphill. It costs seconds and pays back on the final ascent.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for South Downs Half Marathon: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Expect around 2:00 to 3:00 hours for 13.5 miles with nearly 600 metres of climbing, noticeably longer than your road half marathon. The effort stays aerobic but eight climbs keep pushing it upward, so think of a long steady run with hard minutes scattered through it rather than an even tempo.

Core

Train race pace

Your key session is the long run with its weight at the end. Plan a route where a continuous ascent of three to four kilometres still lies ahead after about 90 minutes, and try to run all of it. That is what the way back towards Beachy Head asks of you, and only tired legs reveal whether you have the strength for it.

Specific

Rehearse the course

During the week, add hill repeats of about a kilometre at seven to nine per cent, the shape of the climbs in the first 14 kilometres. Downhill work matters just as much: over 40 per cent of the course falls, and a steep drop still waits before the finish. Practise it deliberately and at speed so your thighs do not give out before Eastbourne.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Do most of your running off-road, on grass, farm tracks and forest paths; that mix loads ankles and calves differently from tarmac even though it is not technical. Since the only aid comes after 13 kilometres, use your long runs to practise carrying your own drink and then eating solid food such as banana, dates or cake just before heading straight back uphill.
