SportScheck RUN Hamburg: Course, Route Profile & Map

The 7.5 km of the SportScheck RUN Hamburg are a single lap of the Außenalster – Hamburg's default training loop, run clockwise and started last of the evening at 22:00. A city race does not get flatter than this: twelve metres of height difference over the whole lap. Preparing for it is pure speed work.

Course & Elevation

Start and finish are on the Alsterwiesen on the western bank, at the corner of Milchstraße and Harvestehuder Weg. From there the route heads north along the Alsterufer, around the northern tip of the lake at the Krugkoppel and back south on the eastern side – along Bellevue, around the Langer Zug inlet and past Schöne Aussicht. The return continues down the east bank to the Kennedybrücke, crosses to the west bank and runs north again to the Alsterwiesen.

The surface changes constantly underfoot: a good half of the lap is asphalt, close to a quarter paving slabs, and the rest is the Alsterwanderweg with its fine water-bound gravel. The elevation moves between three and fourteen metres above sea level, contains not a single climb the profile generator counts as one, and consists of short undulations at the shore roads and bridge ramps.

The character comes from the clock. At 22:00 the shortest race of the evening starts at dusk and finishes in the dark, with the lights of the lakeside houses on the water. There is no race number – the official Brooks event shirt is the entry ticket, and timing is by disposable shoe transponder.

Pacing Strategy

On a lap without a climb, nothing decides the race but consistency. Split the 7.5 kilometres into three near-identical sections: the west bank northbound as a controlled opening, the eastern arc from the Krugkoppel to Schöne Aussicht at race pace, and from the Kennedybrücke onwards whatever is left. The undulations on the bridge ramps are too short to change pace for – run through them rather than attacking them.

The race is decided in the final kilometre on the west bank. It is straight, dark and without landmarks, and because the field spreads out along the open promenade there is barely anyone left to hold on to. Losing time here means you spent it too early in the eastern arc.

The trap is the wind. The Außenalster is an open body of water some one and a half kilometres wide, and in a westerly half the lap runs into the wind with no line of houses to shelter behind. Expect a slower and a faster half rather than even splits, and do not let the fast half tempt you into a pace the headwind side will charge you for.

Training plan for SportScheck RUN Hamburg: 12-week build

For an age-group runner this race takes roughly 28 to 50 minutes depending on level. The character of the effort is one continuous push at or just above threshold: no climbs to break the rhythm, no recovery sections, no technical passages – just the best part of three quarters of an hour in the same posture and the same stride.

Training should therefore emphasise threshold work and speed endurance: intervals of 1,000 to 2,000 metres slightly above race pace, tempo runs of 20 to 30 minutes, and one longer weekly run carrying the aerobic base. Because the course offers no natural changes of pace, it is worth practising a constant rhythm without looking at the watch – on a loop you repeat, for instance.

The surface asks for its own work. Three quarters of the course is asphalt and paving slabs, the rest fine gravel, and the two alternate several times per kilometre. If you normally train mostly on forest floor, put speed sessions deliberately on hard ground and let your calves adapt; shoes with a little grip help on the gravel sections.

Conditions: mid-June, a 22:00 start, mild evening air and a lap that finishes in the dark. Practise a warm-up that works several hours after dinner, plan the last proper meal early in the evening, and run some speed sessions deliberately at dusk – holding a pace without visual landmarks is a skill of its own.
