Brett/Robinson Alabama Coastal Triathlon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The Sprint at the Brett/Robinson Alabama Coastal Triathlon, which the organiser calls the "Tri-It-On", combines a 300 m swim in the Gulf of Mexico, a flat out-and-back bike on the beach road and a two-mile run. It is a short, fast race that starts and finishes on the beach at Gulf Shores.
Course & Elevation
The swim is in the open Gulf with a time-trial start: an athlete enters the water roughly every three seconds, with race numbers assigned by estimated swim time. The Sprint starts at 7:45 am, 45 minutes after the Olympic distance. With the water averaging about 84 F, wetsuits are usually allowed only with restrictions. If the sea is unsafe, the race becomes a duathlon with a run in place of the swim.
From transition on the public beach you ride once west along West Beach Boulevard and back, then run two miles out and back on East Beach Boulevard, turning after one mile. The whole event centres on The Hangout, where the post-race party takes place. The triathlon has been held here for 20 years.
Pacing Strategy
Over such a short distance the temptation is to go all out from the start. In the water that is risky: waves and salt water make frantic swimming expensive. Swim controlled, sight regularly and save the hard effort for the bike.
The race is decided on the 20 or so kilometres of cycling. Ride them evenly hard and expect wind. Start the run with a few easy minutes until your legs adjust; after the turnaround at one mile you can empty the tank.
Training plan for Brett/Robinson Alabama Coastal Triathlon: 12-week build
Most age-group athletes finish in one to one and a half hours. It is an intense effort just below or at threshold, where quick transitions and a fast start into each discipline count.
Practise open-water swimming, in the sea if possible, including sighting and starts from shallow water. On the bike, intervals of 10 to 20 minutes near threshold in the aero position help.
Brick sessions with short, fast runs off the bike prepare you for the change. Rehearse the transition routine and the mount and dismount line as well.
Mid-September in Gulf Shores is warm and humid. Some sessions in the heat and a clear drinking plan make a difference even over the short distance.
