Riverbluff Triathlon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The Sprint at the Riverbluff Triathlon combines a 400 metre swim in Cheatham Lake, a flat bike loop of a little over 19 kilometres on Highway 12 and a 5 km run in Ashland City. It is a compact, fast race near Nashville that has drawn athletes with live music and championship belts for eleven years.
Course & Elevation
The swim is in Cheatham Lake, part of the Cumberland River. It is a time-trial start: an athlete enters the water roughly every three seconds, ordered by club and estimated swim time. The Sprint starts at 8 am, half an hour after the Olympic distance. The organiser quotes an average water temperature of 74 degrees Fahrenheit, and wetsuits are permitted under USAT rules up to 78 degrees.
Transition is in the boat ramp car park in Riverbluff Park. After the swim you ride one loop on Highway 12 towards Davidson County, then run an out-and-back that turns just short of the Bicentennial Trail. Bike and run are both flat, with only a little over 100 metres of climbing between them.
Pacing Strategy
The time-trial start takes the chaos out of the swim. Swim your own pace from the first stroke instead of following others. The 400 metres pass quickly; what matters more is arriving in transition calm and clear-headed.
Most of your time is spent on the bike. Ride the flat loop evenly and just below threshold, drink early and ease off slightly in the last kilometres. On the run, hold goal pace to the turnaround and build on the way back. If you are aiming for a podium, quick, well-rehearsed transitions are where the most time is won.
Training plan for Riverbluff Triathlon: 12-week build
Most age-group athletes finish in between one hour and one and a half hours. The Sprint works well as a first triathlon but also rewards experienced athletes who race it evenly and hard.
Swim two or three times a week and practise in open water a few times, ideally in a wetsuit. On the bike, 8 to 15 minute intervals at race pace help; on the run, 1000 metre repeats.
The key link is brick sessions and practised transitions: set up a small transition area at home and rehearse the sequence several times. As the race is in late August, train in the heat and test your drinking strategy too.
