Course & Elevation

The swim is a counter-clockwise rectangle with an in-water start, in waves for women, men and relays; wetsuits are allowed but not required. Then comes the gently rolling bike loop outside the park and back to transition.

The run stays entirely inside the 720-acre state park, on a wide carriage trail, park roads and sidewalks, with water and sports nutrition at three points. Wilson Endurance Sports runs the race together with the New York State parks office; the field is deliberately small, and the 2027 places were gone within three days.

Pacing Strategy

A sprint forgives little, but this course rewards evenness. Swim briskly without going into the red, so that you find a rhythm on the bike straight away.

On the bike, ride the long rollers at steady pressure and use the gently falling second half to prepare the legs for the run. Take the first run kilometre under control, then build steadily through the park.

Training plan for the Delta Lake Triathlon: 12-week build

For most athletes the sprint takes 70 minutes to an hour and a half, an intense effort just below or at threshold. Swim 750 metres or more in open water regularly, including wave starts.

On the bike, intervals of ten to twenty minutes at race pace on flat roads help; on foot, intervals at 5K pace. Brick sessions with a short, brisk run straight off the bike are the key building block.
