OMNi-BiOTiC Apfelland Triathlon: Course, Elevation & Route Profile
The middle distance is the Sunday race of the OMNi-BiOTiC Apfelland Triathlon and the longest job on the programme: 2 km in the Stubenbergsee, 80 rolling bike kilometres through the apple country of eastern Styria, then a dead flat half marathon around the same lake. The bike decides this race, but the decision only becomes visible on the run.
Course & Elevation
All three disciplines happen on the same shoreline. The swim is a single anticlockwise triangle in the Stubenbergsee, the bike heads out into the hills and back as a closed-road out-and-back ridden twice, and the run circles that same water on asphalt. T1 and T2 therefore sit together at the lake, and you pass the same crowd several times over the day.
The setting is an eastern Styrian bathing lake surrounded by apple orchards. The Apfelland Triathlon counts as the largest triathlon in Styria: around 2,000 athletes from 18 nations start across the weekend, several thousand spectators line the shore, and the roads are closed to traffic. Austrian national titles are awarded at the event, and the middle distance sends a professional field off alongside the age groups. In May the lake sits around 18 degrees, and wetsuits were mandatory at the most recent edition.
Structurally this race differs from its two siblings. It runs on Sunday morning, after the sprint and Olympic distances have used up Saturday, and it carries a cut-off on the run course. Miss it and your race is over, regardless of how the day went until then. Your bike split is therefore not only a question of placing, but a question of how much margin you carry into the half marathon.
Pacing Strategy
Of the three splits the bike is by far the longest, and that is where you distribute your race. The 2 km swim is the smallest share of a day that runs four and a half to six hours. Its job is to cost you nothing rather than to gain you anything: swim the triangle as a duel with the people beside you and you pay three hours later.
The race is settled on the second bike lap, but you only read the result after T2. Rolling terrain hides extra work well while you are in the saddle, and the flat half marathon that follows offers no section where an over-spent bike split can be absorbed. So plan the bike backwards, from the run pace you intend to hold for 18 km, not from what your legs would allow on the road.
T1 and T2 are not a serious source of time over this distance, but they are two decision points. In T1 you commit to what you will take in over the next hours; in T2 you commit to the first kilometres of the run. Spend the seconds a clean changeover actually needs in both.
Training plan for OMNi-BiOTiC Apfelland Triathlon: 12-week build
For an age-group athlete this middle distance takes roughly four and a half to six hours. The nature of the effort changes twice along the way: a calm, even swim, then several hours of constantly varying power over rolling terrain, and finally a completely monotone run with no help from the terrain at all. It is that sequence you prepare for, not any single discipline.
The race-deciding phase is the handover from the second bike lap into the opening kilometres of the run. Rehearse it at least twice in your specific block as a full run-through over about two thirds of race distance, open-water swim in a wetsuit included, with no break between disciplines and in the kit you will actually race in. Whatever goes wrong there will go wrong on race day too.
May conditions belong in the plan. The lake sits in the range where you swim in neoprene, and athletes who have only trained in a pool routinely underestimate what a wetsuit does to breathing and shoulders. The open roads of the apple country can be strongly gusty, and the lakeside run circuit offers no shade by late morning. So ride some long sessions deliberately in wind and in race position, and put runs into the warmest part of the day.
The single biggest lever remains carbohydrate intake. Over a day this long it decides more than any extra training hour, and it has to be rehearsed at race intensity rather than on easy rides. Alongside it, fix your race-morning routine: when you eat, what you take in last before the swim, and how T1 runs.
