The Colonial Beach Olympic Triathlon combines a swim in the brackish Potomac, two flat-to-rolling bike laps through Westmoreland County and a pancake-flat 10 km along the waterfront. In late June, the heat is the real opponent.
The day starts on the beach at Colonial Beach, the resort town the organiser calls the Playground of the Potomac. The swim is a rectangular course parallel to the shore, never more than 150 metres out, with a time-trial start: after an elite box, two athletes enter every two to three seconds. With water typically around 80 to 82 °F the race is usually not wetsuit legal, and a current can mean the direction is reversed on race morning.
Swim start and exit sit side by side on the beach, and you can leave shoes there for the trip to transition. The bike is two laps on open country roads with views of river, marshland and forest, and no aid. Then comes a flat out-and-back run along the boardwalk and through shaded streets by the bay.
Kinetic Multisports runs the race as a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, and the town is an easy trip from Richmond, Baltimore and Washington.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Temperature shapes this race, not terrain. Swim without a wetsuit under control and use the time-trial start to find your own rhythm rather than chasing faster swimmers; any current costs effort on one leg of the rectangle and gives time back on the other.
On the bike the first lap is the place for restraint and for drinking, because there is nothing on the course. If you can ride the second lap at the same power, you reach the run with something left.
The race is decided over the last two miles on the open boardwalk. That is where sun, heat and the fatigue of more than two hours meet. The usual trap is starting too fast on the flat bike and run courses and paying double at the end.

Age-group athletes usually take two and a half to three and a half hours for the Olympic distance here. The effort is mostly steady and aerobic, without long climbs but with heavy heat load in the second half.
For the swim, open-water sessions without a wetsuit pay off, since the race is usually not wetsuit legal, along with sighting practice and swimming against a light current. Yellow triangle buoys mark the turns, with orange sighting buoys about every 75 metres.
On bike and run, the combination counts: long bricks of 60 to 90 minutes of steady riding on flat roads followed by a 20 to 30 minute run at race pace are the core session.
The late-June heat needs its own preparation. Put some of those bricks into the warm hours of the day, rehearse your drinking plan with no aid on the bike, and practise cooling at the run aid stations.
