FSA Bike Festival Riva del Garda.

Ronda Piccola is the shortest of the three routes at the FSA Bike Festival Riva del Garda, and at heart it is one long ascent: from Riva at around 70 metres it climbs to roughly 1,000 metres before a single uninterrupted descent brings you back. What counts is climbing steadily for a long time and still descending with a clear head afterwards.

FSA Bike Festival Riva del Garda 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

After a short flat opening the climb that defines the whole loop begins at around km 2. The first eight kilometres rise evenly at a little over six percent, then the gradient bites: from km 11 a stretch of about two and a half kilometres averages close to ten percent, followed shortly by a shorter kick of similar steepness. The high point comes only after roughly 17 kilometres, and by then you have banked practically all of the day's climbing.

From the top the course drops without any real counter-climb to around km 27, back to the level of the start, a little over 900 metres of descent in roughly ten kilometres. The final kilometres to the finish are almost flat, broken only by one small rise.

Start and finish are in Riva del Garda, and the appeal of this loop is its simplicity: one ascent from the town to about 1,000 metres and the return to the valley, nothing more. Up to the first high point you ride the same ramps as the Ronda Grande field; where they turn further into the mountains, your day is settled on the descent to Riva. It runs on 1 May, the same day the long Ronda Extrema hosts a round of the HERO UCI marathon World Cup.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace FSA Bike Festival Riva del Garda.

Start

Sit in early

Because almost all the climbing sits in the first 17 kilometres, this is essentially a long hill time trial with a descent attached. Split the ascent in two: ride the steady section up to about km 10 at an effort you could hold for well over an hour, because the steeper ramps that follow ask for more force.

Mid-race

Ration your effort

The ramp from km 11 decides the loop. Averaging close to ten percent with pitches around 18 percent, it forces you into a low gear and heavy pedal strokes, and this is where an overcooked first half of the climb costs you: whatever you gained by pushing the moderate kilometres, you lose again on the steepest one.

Finish

Race the finale

The top is not the end of the race. Around ten kilometres of continuous descending demand concentration and strength in arms and core, and ridden with a tired mind they turn slow and risky. Gain time there with clean lines rather than gambles, and keep your last hard effort for the flat kilometres before the finish.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for FSA Bike Festival Riva del Garda: 12-week build

Base

Build endurance

For a committed amateur the Ronda Piccola takes roughly two to three hours, and more than half of that is the ascent. It is a long, mostly aerobic climbing effort that only tips into short hard spikes on the steep ramps near the top.

Core

Train the climbs

The core of your preparation is therefore long climbs of 45 to 90 minutes at a time, ridden just below threshold. Put the steepest sections deliberately at the end of those sessions so you practise putting force into ramps of 15 percent and more on tired legs. Seated, low-cadence strength-endurance work helps you get through such pitches without fading.

Specific

Ride race-specific

The second half of the race is skill. Practise longer mountain bike descents straight after a hard climbing block rather than fresh, because that is how you meet the ten kilometres downhill on race day. Endurance in arms, shoulders and core is part of it.

Race week

Arrive fresh

The 1 May date falls early in the season. You need to build the long climbing volume in late winter and spring, so that the race ascent is not your first hour on a mountain this year.
