The Gorillaman Triathlon de Montauban is the weekend's middle distance: a swim in a calm stretch of the Tarn above a weir, two laps over the hills north of town and a half marathon in four laps through the old town. Finishing it well mostly comes down to planning for a run that lands in the early-July midday warmth. Also known as Triathlon de Montauban and Gorillaman Triathlon Montauban.
Everything starts at the Cours Foucault, the hub of the whole weekend. The swim is in the Tarn, in a stretch the organiser describes as especially calm because it lies above a weir. Then comes the same bike loop twice: flat along the river valley first, then over a short, steep ramp up into the hills and back down towards town.
The run is four laps alternating between a green way by the water and the pedestrian streets of the old town, passing the finish line each lap, a finish the organiser deliberately stages like a big-race arch. The M shares the run loop from late morning, so the last laps get busy.
The long distance has carried the Gorillaman name since 2023 and is the flagship of the club that has organised the Triathlon de Montauban since 2015; more than 200 athletes started it in 2024. There is prize money, and drafting is not allowed.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
The early hours are easy to underestimate: the bike starts flat, and that cool morning valley is exactly where people ride a pace they will not have on lap two. Ride the flat valley kilometres at an output you could repeat on the second lap, and take the ramp into the hills seated and controlled.
The race is decided on the four run laps. The rhythm keeps changing between the green way, the old-town streets and the passes by the finish, and by midday in early July it is warm; the organiser explicitly plans water and spraying at the aid stations for high temperatures.
The classic trap is a fast first run lap fed by the noise at the finish, paid for on lap three.

For a capable age-grouper the Gorillaman takes roughly five to six and a half hours. Most of that is steady aerobic work on the bike without drafting, broken by two short, steep climbs per lap that push briefly over threshold.
The closing half marathon is the key task. Brick sessions with long rides followed by 45 to 75 minute runs teach you to settle into an even run rhythm on tired legs, even on a course that switches between green way and paving as often as this one.
Plan for heat on purpose: do some of your bricks in the warmest part of the day and practise drinking and cooling at every aid station, because this run falls in the midday hours.
On the bike, long aero rides on flat roads are the backbone, with short hill intervals of two to four minutes added. In the water, calm open-water sessions with sighting practice are enough, since this stretch of the Tarn has little current.
