The 7K Funtrail is the shortest loop at the Gunung Kawi Ridge Run and the only course that stays below the big mountain climb. Set near Wagir in East Java, it is still no flat jog: two steep ramps straight after the start decide how much you carry into the rolling way home.
The loop starts and finishes at roughly 1,000 metres, and almost all of its climbing sits in the first third. The trail rises steeply straight from the start, and after a brief easing a second ramp of nearly a kilometre follows. A little over two kilometres in, the course tops out just above 1,200 metres.
From there it turns for home: rolling, mostly falling sections give back around 170 metres of height by about km 5.2. One last rise of close to 80 metres starts at km 5.7, and the final kilometre runs back down to where you began.
The organiser presents the event as trail running in East Java and marks the elevation range, checkpoint and water station on the course page. The 7K label is rounded: the official track measures 7.87 km, and the organiser itself notes that category names and measured lengths can differ.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
The first two kilometres are the most expensive part of the loop. Run them on start-line adrenaline and you pay for it on the rolling middle section, which is where the time is actually made. Power-hike the steepest metres of the first ramp and only run again once your breathing has settled.
Between km 2.5 and km 5 the course drops in waves, and that is where relaxed legs can build speed. The real trap comes afterwards: the rise at km 5.7 arrives just as you start thinking about the finish.
Treat it as a fixed part of the loop, and keep enough focus for clean footwork on the closing descent, since the course runs almost 900 metres longer than its name.

Most recreational runners will cover the 7K Funtrail in roughly 50 to 80 minutes. The effort is uneven: steep ramps early push you briefly into the anaerobic zone, followed by a long stretch of rhythmic downhill and rolling running.
The opening two kilometres and the late rise are what decide the day. Train short, steep hill intervals of two to four minutes, mixing running with brisk hiking, and practise running on easily straight afterwards rather than stopping.
More than a quarter of the distance descends steeply. Downhill running on trails belongs in every week, so that quads and ankles carry the drop to the finish without fading. A long run of 60 to 75 minutes over rolling ground makes sure the seven-plus kilometres hold no surprises.
If you mostly run on roads, fit several sessions on unpaved paths in before 20 December to build sure footing. Study the course page with its checkpoint and water station beforehand, so you know where you can drink.
