Holly Jolly Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The Holly Jolly Marathon in Camarillo runs four times over the same flat out-and-back on the city's bike path. The course asks little of you on its own; the challenge is staying focused and even across four loops and eight turnarounds.
Course & Elevation
The start is at 7 a.m. in Pleasant Valley Fields Park. The marathon covers the half-marathon course twice, so four loops of the out-and-back of a little over three kilometres each way, each loop about 10.5 kilometres. The course shown here is the half marathon with its two loops; the marathon runs it twice.
Elevation ranges between just over 40 and just over 60 metres, spread across the gentle out and back of each loop. No section is steep, the bike path is closed to cars, and the USATF-certified course carries mile markers.
The organiser, Elite Sports California, sets a seven-hour limit and offers an early 6 a.m. start for anyone who needs more time and knows the course. Water stations come roughly every 1.5 miles, but without disposable cups: bring your own or buy a reusable one on site.
Pacing Strategy
Four identical loops are a gift for pacing: you can compare each loop with the one before. Use that and run the first two deliberately easy, ideally at the same effort on the slightly rising way out and the falling way back.
The trap is the third loop. The half marathoners have finished, the field thins out, and the repetition wears on your concentration. This is where many runners slowly lose pace. Set small targets for loops three and four and use the turnarounds to check in with yourself.
Each turnaround costs some momentum, and eight of them add up. Take them tight and consciously accelerate back to pace afterwards.
Training plan for Holly Jolly Marathon: 12-week build
For most age-group runners the marathon takes between 3:30 and 5:30 hours, longer with the generous limit. The load is a purely aerobic effort on flat ground; no climb decides the race, only whether you hold your pace for 42 kilometres.
The focus is therefore long runs up to 30 or 32 kilometres, with marathon-pace segments inside them. Run them on a loop or out-and-back where you can, to rehearse the mental side of four identical loops.
Train your fuelling with your own cup or bottle, since the stations have no disposable cups, and plan gels and drinks around stations roughly every 1.5 miles.
The pre-Christmas date means a build-up through autumn and an early morning start. Long runs early in the day help you rehearse race-day routine.
