Course & Elevation

The gun goes at 6:45 at Big Sur Station, the highest point on the course. The opening kilometres run down the Big Sur river valley through redwoods, past Big Sur Village and Andrew Molera State Park, losing height steadily. Only at Point Sur does the landscape open up: from there to the finish you are on the exposed coastal edge, ocean to your left, the Santa Lucia Range to your right.

The race is decided between kilometre 16 and 19. There the road climbs for 3.4 kilometres at an average of 4.6 percent and up to 7.2 percent to Hurricane Point, at 170 metres the high point of the course and the only categorised climb of the day. A Taiko drum line traditionally sits halfway up it. Over the top comes a long descent to Bixby Creek Bridge at almost exactly half-marathon distance, where a grand piano has been played at the north end of the span since the first race in 1986.

The last third is what gives this course its character. You run one lane of a two-lane coastal highway with no spectators and no parking, because the road is closed outright, past ranches and over the bridges at Garrapata Creek and Granite Canyon. Between kilometre 24 and the finish sit six short climbs of 400 to 750 metres at four to five percent, the last of them at kilometre 40. Just before it comes the Strawberry Station at mile 23.2; the finish is at Highway 1 and Rio Road in Carmel, 86 metres below the start.

Pacing Strategy

The first 15 kilometres give away height, and that is the trap. The course drops 86 metres net and spends more of its length descending (39.4 percent) than climbing, but that balance is very unevenly distributed: almost all of the loss sits before Hurricane Point and in the closing third. Convert the free opening into goal pace and you arrive at the foot of the climb with your heart rate already too high.

The climb from kilometre 16 to 19 is run on effort, not on pace. The exposed edge up to Hurricane Point is where the Pacific headwind usually sits, and 4.6 percent plus wind easily costs a minute per kilometre. The summit turns straight into a long descent: do not attack it, roll it. The 617 metres of total descent are why Big Sur ends in your quadriceps rather than your lungs.

The second trap starts after kilometre 31. Six short ramps of four to five percent arrive exactly when the eccentric load of the descents is already in your legs; individually each is trivial, together they decide the last half hour. The intermediate cut-offs frame the day: mile 15.2 by 10:30, mile 21.2 by 11:50, and the road reopens at 13:00.

Training plan for Big Sur International Marathon: 12-week build

Expect 3:15 to 5:30 hours as a well-prepared age-group runner; the limit is six hours because Highway 1 reopens to traffic at 13:00. The effort is aerobic and steady for most of its length, but it is not monotonous: one long climb, one long descent and a rolling final third ask for three different abilities in a single race.

The decisive phase is the ascent after kilometre 16. Prepare it with sustained hill efforts of two to four kilometres at four to six percent, run at marathon to threshold effort and explicitly not as intervals. Because it arrives after roughly one hour forty of running, it belongs inside a long run rather than at the start of one.

The second emphasis is downhill running under fatigue. 617 metres of descent, split between one long drop and a continuously undulating final third, load the quadriceps eccentrically far harder than any city marathon. Put three- to five-kilometre descents into the back half of long runs, and get used to the camber of a coastal road on which you only have one lane to work with.

On conditions, the organiser gives an average of 10 to 16 degrees and 30 to 50 percent humidity, and names the sometimes fierce headwind as a feature of the course. Train tempo work into the wind on open ground and test your race and warm-up kit in cool coastal fog. The day starts very early: buses to the start begin loading at 3:30, so rehearse wake-up time, breakfast and fuelling plan at least twice in training.
