Transition, expo and finish all sit on the Avenida de las Playas, so you keep returning to the same place all day.
Then comes the real test: one bike loop of just over 180 kilometres across half the island, through Yaiza, the lava fields of Timanfaya, Tinajo and Teguise and up to the Mirador del Río in the north, with around 2,500 metres of climbing and a high point just under 590 metres. The road is closed to traffic; the wind is not. Back at transition a three-lap marathon waits on the seafront promenade, one long lap out to Playa Honda and two shorter ones turning in Los Pocillos.
The contrast is what defines the race: volcanic hinterland without shade on the bike, then a flat, busy waterfront where the closing hours are run in the dark and in front of a crowd.
Pacing Strategy
The race is decided on the bike, but not where most people look for it. The first 40 kilometres often run fast and friendly, and the second half through the north collects the bill. Read a tailwind morning as proof of form and you will be recalculating in the crosswind at the Mirador del Río. Plan the ride as a power budget for six to seven hours rather than a reaction to your speed display.
The transitions matter more here than at most races. You cannot overcook the exit from the swim, because the first longer climbs start right behind town, and after the bike you meet a marathon with no built-in recovery: flat means constant load with no break in your stride.
The bike cutoffs are structural and end races here every year, as does the 17-hour overall limit. If your margin is thin, build it in the first third of the course, because the north reliably eats it again.

Add rides in genuine wind instead of only on calm days, because a crosswind on an open road is a handling and strength problem. Equipment decisions belong in that work too; deep-section wheels are explicitly not recommended on this island.
The marathon asks for something different: runs straight off long rides, ideally in the heat of the day and with the fuelling you intend to race on. Because the run course is flat there is no natural change in your movement pattern, so the same structures carry the load for hours.
May conditions belong in the plan from the start: over 25 degrees, almost no shade, salty air and a finish in the dark. Heat acclimatisation, a rehearsed drinking and salt routine and experience with solid food under load are fundamentals here, not fine tuning. Plan at least one rehearsal that strings open-water swimming, a long ride and a short run together: the Australian exit, the transition routes on the Avenida de las Playas and getting dressed after salt water can only be practised as a sequence, not in three separate sessions.
