Mountain Lakes Triathlon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Mountain Lakes Triathlon reaches its 40th edition in 2027, and the Sprint is its entry race: a 600-yard time-trial swim in Lake Guntersville, one flat bike loop of just over 26 kilometres and a fast out-and-back along the shore. Flat and fast, but never cool in July in Alabama.

Course & Elevation

The swim is a time trial: roughly every three seconds one athlete enters the water, in race-number order, with numbers assigned by estimated swim time. That spreads the field and takes the chaos out of the start. The water averages around 84°F, at the top of the band in which wetsuits are still allowed.

Transition sits in the Senior Center parking area next to the Parks and Recreation Center. From there the bike loop runs over residential and rural roads with a few short rollers, then you head out on the paved lakeside trail to the turnaround and back.

The whole race happens in the morning, starting at 7:30, and everything takes place around the lakeside park. After the finish comes the pool party, one of the oldest traditions of this race.

Pacing Strategy

The Sprint is short enough to be hard almost throughout, but long enough for heat to become a factor. Swim evenly: in a time-trial start there is no pack to pull you and no reason to sprint the first metres.

The race is decided on the bike. Ride evenly and drink in the last kilometres, and you will run faster than someone who went all out on the little rollers.

The trap is the heat on the closing run. Leave the second transition calmly and only build after the turnaround.

Training plan for Mountain Lakes Triathlon: 12-week build

Most age-group athletes finish in 1:15 to 1:45. That is an effort just below threshold, across three disciplines and two transitions where every second counts.

In swim training, even intervals of 100 to 200 metres matter more than sprints, because in a time-trial start you have to find your own pace. Practise swimming without a wetsuit too, because in warm water it is often not allowed or not worth it.

On the bike, threshold intervals in the aero position help; for the run, brick runs straight off the bike. Transitions can be trained: shoes, helmet, race number, always in the same order.

Late July in north Alabama is hot and humid. Acclimatise to training in the heat in the weeks before and make drinking on the bike part of the plan.
