The Sprint at the Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon is a 300 metre downstream swim in the Tennessee River, 22 kilometres on Riverside Drive and Amnicola Highway, and a 5 km run across the Walnut Street Bridge. The race has run for 45 years and moves to Coolidge Park, across the water from downtown, in 2027.
The swim is point to point with the current. The Sprint starts near transition below the Blue Rhino and finishes just past the Market Street Bridge at a ramp. It is a time-trial start: an athlete enters the water roughly every three seconds, ordered by estimated swim time, and the Sprint goes half an hour after the Olympic distance.
From Coolidge Park on the north shore a short, steady climb takes you over the Veterans Bridge and out onto four-lane Riverside Drive and Amnicola Highway. You ride the inside lanes, coned off from traffic and controlled by police, out to the turn and back the same way. The run then crosses the Walnut Street Bridge, follows the Tennessee Riverwalk on the south bank for a stretch and comes back over the bridge to the park.
The organiser quotes an average of 77 degrees Fahrenheit in the air and 83 in the water. Water that warm usually rules a wetsuit out for anyone racing for awards.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

The swim is short and the current helps. Go in briskly but under control; the time-trial start removes most of the usual jostling anyway. The run from the exit ramp to transition is already part of the race.
Most of your time is spent on the bike. After the short climb to the bridge the course is flat and fast, so ride steadily just below threshold and use the turnaround to drink. The real trap is the heat: overcook the bike and you pay for it on the run once the sun is up over the river.
Run the first kilometre over the bridge under control and only lift the pace on the way back.

For a trained age-group athlete the Sprint takes roughly one to one and a half hours. It is a sustained, mostly aerobic effort with a short, hard swim start and a fast run at the end.
The race is decided on the flat bike and in transition. Train 10 to 20 minute intervals just below threshold, and brick sessions in which you run 15 to 20 minutes at race pace straight off the bike. Include a short climb right after transition in those sessions, because that is how the course begins.
Swim in open water regularly and practise exiting up a ramp and starting without a mass start. The Tennessee River's current makes the swim faster, but you still need to sight.
Late June in Chattanooga is hot and humid. Do some of your brick sessions in the heat, practise drinking on the bike and plan to swim without a wetsuit.
