Singelloop Breda: Course, Route Profile & Map

The half marathon at the Singelloop Breda runs the ring of canals around the old town twice and finishes on the Grote Markt in the middle of the centre. A flat lap course with no climb at all - what decides it is not the terrain but how evenly you run the second lap.

Course & Elevation

The course starts on the Claudius Prinsenlaan by the city offices, runs an approach loop and then covers the singels - the canals that enclose Breda's historic core - twice, with sections through the centre itself and along the Wilhelminasingel, before finishing on the Grote Markt.

There is no climbing worth the name: the whole route sits between two and eleven metres above sea level, the profile registers not one climb, and the 55 metres of ascent the analysis reports are measurement noise on flat ground. What the course has instead is corners. A canal ring in an old city is a sequence of direction changes, and you run it twice.

It is held on a Sunday in early April and organised by Le Champion, the club behind the Dam tot Damloop and the TCS Amsterdam Marathon. It is the city's largest sporting event, with music along the route and a finish on the central square. The distance was already sold out for 2027 when this entry was written.

Pacing Strategy

A flat two-lap course forgives nothing about a fast start, because nothing slows you down later. Run the approach loop and the first lap deliberately at the pace you still want to be holding at the end, and do not let the dense opening kilometres pull you along.

The second lap is the test. You pass points you already know, you know exactly how much is left, and you have to hold the same pace with no variation in the profile at all. Race the first lap and you lose a minute a kilometre here, with no climb to blame.

Corners are the underrated factor. A canal ring means constant braking and accelerating, and over two laps of 21 kilometres that adds up. Take them cleanly on the outside instead of sprinting out of them. Early April in Brabant is mild, but wind can stand over the open water of the singels - run in a group when it does.

Training plan for Singelloop Breda: 12-week build

For most runners this is an hour and a half to two and a half hours close to threshold. The demand is entirely even: no climb, no technical section, no forced pause - just a pace that has to be held for a long time.

The emphasis is therefore threshold work: tempo runs of 30 to 50 minutes at intended race pace, plus longer intervals of 2,000 to 5,000 metres with short recoveries. Long runs of 18 to 24 kilometres with a race-pace block at the end match what the second lap asks for.

Two course-specific things repay attention. Loops first: put part of your long runs on a circuit you cover more than once, so that the moment after lap one feels familiar on race day. Corners second - fartlek on twisting city routes rather than straight open roads, because your race is made of direction changes.

Early April in the Netherlands means mild, often damp and usually windy. Prepare for eight to fourteen degrees, practise holding pace into wind on open ground, and plan fuelling for a short hard race - what you eat before the start counts for more here than anything you take on the way round.
