The Van der Valk Hotel Half Marathon at the Arrow Venloop has a reputation as the fastest half marathon in the Netherlands, and in 2023 it produced the quickest half ever run on Dutch soil. Twenty-one kilometres with almost no height difference, two Maas bridges as the only structure in the profile and a 14:00 start: this is a course built for a personal best, not for an adventure.

Course & Elevation

The race starts on the Deken van Oppensingel beside the Julianapark. The opening kilometres run through the city centre and south along the Koninginnesingel, then the course leaves Venlo and from kilometre six runs through Tegelen and on to Steyl on the Maas, the southernmost point at kilometre ten. From there it heads back north through Tegelen.

At kilometre 14 the course crosses the Maas. The national height model puts that deck at 26 to 28 metres, a good six metres above the surrounding street level, and it is the only climb on the loop worth the name. The kilometres through Blerick that follow stay on that slightly higher shelf before the course crosses back into Venlo on the Eindhovenseweg bridge at kilometre 20 and finishes at the Keulsepoort. About 52 metres of ascent over 21 kilometres in total, with 86 percent of the distance flat.

The appeal is the city rather than the terrain. Venlo turns race day into a street festival, with bands and organised atmosphere points spread over the whole loop, and the finish street was voted the most beautiful in the Netherlands and Belgium by Runner's World readers in 2016. The event goes back to 62 people from Venlo who ran the 2004 New York Marathon together and decided their town should have a New York in miniature. The half marathon's 12,000 places were gone within 72 hours in 2026.

Pacing Strategy

On a course with 52 metres of ascent over 21 kilometres, evenness is what decides it. Plan a genuine even split or a marginally negative one, and treat kilometres two to 13 through Tegelen and Steyl as one long block at goal pace, without surging out of corners and turns. The course gives you no free recovery, but it takes nothing from you either.

The two bridges at kilometre 14 and kilometre 20 are the only places to let the pace go deliberately. Six metres of climbing costs a handful of seconds; attacking the kilometre 14 ramp costs you the seven kilometres after it, where there is no opportunity left to settle back down.

The real trap comes before the start. The half marathon does not go until 14:00, after a whole day of waiting and after both shorter distances; eat your usual breakfast and then nothing until the gun and you start on empty. Then there is the wind. Between Tegelen and Steyl and on both bridge sections the course is fully exposed, and a March afternoon in the Maas valley reliably delivers the headwind that decides the finishing time.

Training plan for Arrow Venloop: 12-week build

Expect 70 minutes to a little over two hours of racing; the cut-off is 180 minutes. The demand is a steady tempo effort just below or at anaerobic threshold. There are no climbs to structure the race for you and no descents to recover on: the load is close to constant across the full distance, which is physiologically harder than it looks on paper.

The training emphasis is therefore speed endurance rather than climbing strength. Long runs with extended blocks at half marathon goal pace, threshold intervals of eight to 20 minutes and one progressive long run a week cover that demand. Short hard intervals help less here than the ability to hold a pace for 90 minutes and more without losing it.

Two specific additions are worth it. First, wind: find an exposed stretch for one or two sessions in the build-up and deliberately run goal pace into it rather than defending the pace at any cost. Second, corners and kerbs, because a city course is made of changes of direction, and those cost calves and ankles if you only ever train on straight paths.

Race-day preparation includes the hour. Simulate one or two long sessions in the early afternoon, with the same breakfast and the same mid-day meal you intend to eat in Venlo. March in Limburg can mean anything from five degrees and rain to mild sunshine, so plan clothing in layers and test it at race pace beforehand, not on the day.
