The early-August Vermont Sun Sprint Triathlon is the high-summer edition of the series at Lake Dunmore: 600 yards in the warm, clear lake, the 14-mile bike loop around Lake Dunmore and Fern Lake, and a shaded 5 km run on VT 53. A short, fast race where heat and transitions make the difference.
The swim is a single, well-marked loop close to the Lake Dunmore shore, never more than 70 yards out, guarded by kayakers. In August the lake is typically at its warmest, the organiser quotes 74 to 82 °F, and wetsuits are allowed but hardly needed.
The right-turn-only bike follows VT 53 and drops to Leicester, runs flat north on US 7 and returns to the lake over a short climb of up to seven percent. The run is an out-and-back on VT 53 with a small hill just outside the park and lots of forest shade.
Start, transition and finish are in Branbury State Park at the foot of Rattlesnake Point. The series has run since 1986, each race is capped at 400 and USAT-sanctioned, and spectators can spend the day on the park beach.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

In high summer a sprint is rarely lost at the start but in the closing kilometres. Swim under control, drink on the rolling early bike kilometres, and ride US 7 evenly instead of in surges.
The late bike climb and the gently rising first run kilometre are the two places where overheating threatens.
Ease off deliberately there and spend your reserves only after the run turnaround, where the return is flat and drops into the finish.

Expect a total of about 1:10 to 1:45 at an effort close to threshold.
The climb at roughly 17 km on the bike and the first minutes of running after it decide the race. Bricks with a climb at the end of the ride and a run straight afterwards are the most important training.
The August date calls for heat adaptation: train at warm times of day in the final weeks, test your drinks and salt, and practise quick transitions so you lose no time standing in the sun.
In the water, brisk 100 to 200 m intervals and some open-water work with sighting are enough.
