The International distance at the Greenfield Triathlon combines a river swim in the Green River with four bike laps over the Eunice Williams Covered Bridge and a run up to the crest at Eunice Williams Drive. For more than four decades it has been the long course of the longest-running triathlon in New England.
The swim is just over a kilometre in the Green River. You start off the beach in front of the footbridge in age-group waves two minutes apart, on a buoy-marked course, and the organiser strongly recommends a wetsuit. If you need to walk, Greenfield's rules allow it only in water at least waist deep. Should the river fail its mandatory water testing, the swim is replaced by a short run of a third of a mile.
After transition at the swimming area come four laps of the 7.6-mile bike loop over Leyden Road, the covered wooden bridge and Green River Road, each with two short, firm climbs. The 6.5-mile run then climbs for a long stretch to the crest at Eunice Williams Drive and comes back downhill to the finish by the river.
The race is put on by the City of Greenfield, and the proceeds go to its Recreation Department. The field is capped at 200 starters, and in 2027 Greenfield also hosts the Massachusetts Senior Games for athletes aged 50 and over.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

This race carries its weight on the bike, but it is decided on the run. Swim calmly and sight on the buoys, because an overcooked start in river water costs more on the bike than it gains in the water.
On the bike, the eight climbs are short, but every ramp ridden too hard adds up. Ride them evenly and use the long descents to pedal rather than recover. T2 comes after close to 48 km, and anyone with reserves left there can shape the run.
The big trap is the run's long climb between the third and fifth kilometres. Anyone who spent too much on the bike loses more time there than they gained on it. Note also that the organiser sets a cut-off for starting the run.

Expect about 2:45 to 4:15 hours in total: roughly 18 to 35 minutes of swimming, 1:25 to 2:10 hours on the bike and 50 to 80 minutes of running. The effort is mostly aerobic, with many short spikes on the bike and one long, steady climb on the run.
For the swim, sessions in open water or a river help, along with buoy sighting and getting used to the wetsuit. On the bike, repeated short climbs of two to three minutes come first, set inside long rides.
The core of the plan is brick sessions: long, rolling rides followed by a run that includes a long, gentle climb. That is exactly the combination Greenfield asks for.
The race is held in early August. Train some sessions at race time in the morning and plan your fuelling so you drink regularly throughout.

Preparation for Greenfield Triathlon should account for 60.21 km, current training load, and available training time. An adaptive plan helps place key sessions without ignoring recovery and real life.
The pacing strategy for Greenfield Triathlon should reflect 60.21 km and your current fitness. Start controlled and keep margin for sections where the profile or fatigue makes target pace harder.
