Lake Dunmore Triathlon 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The swim is two laps of clear, usually calm Lake Dunmore, never more than 70 metres from shore, and the organiser allows wetsuits at all times. Two identical bike laps follow, each with the rolling lakeshore, the drop to Leicester, flat US 7 and the short climb back to VT 53, about 420 metres of climbing in all.

The run is an out-and-back on VT 53 to Fern Lake, with two short climbs on the way out and aid roughly every 1.5 miles. The cut-off is four hours from the wave start, and the organiser points anyone who cannot make it to the half-length Vermont Sun Triathlon held the same day.

The series has run since 1986, reaching its 42nd year in 2027 under race director Steve Hare. The race is USAT-sanctioned and capped at 400. Sprinters start half an hour later on the same day, so the state-park beach is busy.

Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Lake Dunmore Triathlon.

Start

Settle into the race

At Olympic distance the bike decides the run. Swim the two laps evenly, ride the first bike lap deliberately below feel and fuel on the descents to Leicester so the second lap does not slow down.

Mid-race

Spread the effort

The classic trap is the sprinters who appear during your second bike lap and on the run: their pace is built for half the distance.

Finish

Finish strong

The second climb at around 39 km on the bike and run kilometres five to eight are where you find out whether your pacing was right.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Lake Dunmore Triathlon: 12-week build

Base

Build all three disciplines

Age-group athletes take about 2:30 to 3:45, a long, mostly aerobic effort with threshold portions and recurring short spikes on the climbs.

Core

Brick sessions

The second bike lap and the second half of the run decide the race. Train long bricks of 60 to 90 minutes on rolling roads and 30 to 45 minutes of running, making sure the second half of each holds up.

Specific

Practise transitions

Late August can still be hot in Vermont. Get used to training in the warmth, test your fuelling for close to three hours, and plan with the four-hour cut-off in mind.

Race week

Arrive fresh

For the swim, sessions of 1500 to 2000 m with race-pace intervals, open-water practice and rehearsing the turn between two laps help.
