The Ekistica Sonder Monster takes the Larapinta Trail in one go: from Redbank Gorge to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station with no stages to break it up. The longest race of the West Macs Monster covers 231 kilometres and six major peaks through Tjoritja / West MacDonnell Ranges, and it runs through several nights.
The race gives you no time to settle. The first climb starts within a few hundred metres, and the second, at kilometre 5, lifts you to around 1,150 metres, a height the course reaches only once more. From there the route falls for a long way to below 700 metres, and as far as Ellery Creek Big Hole, a little over 100 kilometres in, the climbs stay manageable and widely spaced.
The real test comes late. Between kilometres 150 and 172 sit the steepest ramps of the race, including one kilometre averaging more than 20 percent, with Standley Chasm in the middle of them. Only then does the ground settle: over the last 45 kilometres, by way of Simpsons Gap, the route stays below 800 metres.
The running is on rugged, technical singletrack over rock and red dirt. May brings an average of 23 degrees by day and around 7 at night, with rain unlikely. With about eleven hours of daylight, more than half of every race day is dark, so night sections on rock are no side issue here. The finish at the Telegraph Station is the one every other race of the festival shares.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
The first eight kilometres are the most expensive of the race because they feel the cheapest. Around 630 metres of climbing arrive at once on fresh legs, and anyone who climbs them at 60K effort pays for it only on the second night. Take these climbs calmly enough that you could carry on running at the top without a break.
The long stretch to Ellery Creek is the second trap. The climbs there are short, so people run too much and eat too little. You gain no hours here, but you do decide whether you can still take in calories later.
The race is settled between kilometres 150 and 172. These ramps are hiked, not run, and all that matters is whether you can still descend safely over rock afterwards. Those who can will actually run the quieter last 45 kilometres; everyone else walks them.

Age-group athletes should expect roughly 45 to 70 hours, depending on ability. This is less a run than a sustained state of running, hiking, eating and headtorch light, almost entirely at easy aerobic effort, broken by short ramps that ask more of your legs than of your lungs.
Build your preparation around weekends with two long sessions back to back, and put the steepest climbing deliberately in the second half. That is the only way to practise what the ramps after kilometre 150 demand: strong uphill hiking on legs with a full day behind them. Short, very steep repeats on a hill or on stairs add to this.
Around 40 percent of the course goes downhill, and it does so over rock. Train descents on stony paths specifically, tired and in the dark with a headtorch, because ankles and quads end up setting your speed. Smooth forest roads will not prepare you for this ground.
The swing from about 23 degrees by day to 7 at night hits you repeatedly, often at walking pace when you generate little heat. Test layers and food on a long session through the night, and decide beforehand when and how you intend to sleep briefly.

Preparation for West Macs Monster should account for 231 km, 6,258 m of elevation gain, current training load, and available training time. An adaptive plan helps place key sessions without ignoring recovery and real life.
The pacing strategy for West Macs Monster should reflect 231 km, 6,258 m of elevation gain, and your current fitness. Start controlled and keep margin for sections where the profile or fatigue makes target pace harder.
