The Garmin Zevenheuvelenloop is the fastest 15 km road race in the world and still anything but flat: over the moraine ridge south-east of Nijmegen the course climbs a good fifty metres in the first five kilometres, almost without you noticing, before the seven hills it is named after arrive. A personal best here is won by surviving that opening false flat.

Start and finish sit on the Groesbeekseweg at the Sumatrastraat, inside Nijmegen. From there the route runs out along the Nijmeegse Baan and Derdebaan onto the Zevenheuvelenweg, then over the Meerwijkselaan, Postweg, Molenbosweg, Oude Kleefsebaan and Kwakkenbergweg before the Postweg and Gelderselaan bring it back to the Groesbeekseweg. Measured as a loop that is a little over 15 kilometres with around 145 metres of climbing.

The profile falls into three clearly separate parts. Up to kilometre five the course rises from just under 40 to over 90 metres, almost continuously at two to three percent, with a short ramp at kilometre 2.5. The middle third ripples between 80 and 100 metres along the Zevenheuvelenweg. The sharpest feature comes late: at kilometre ten the road drops to 67 metres and then climbs back to nearly 100 over a good 600 metres, touching seven percent. From there the last four kilometres run downhill all the way to the level of the start.

The race is held in mid-November across an ice-age push moraine, through woodland and over open ridges towards Groesbeek and Berg en Dal. That is the coldest, wettest part of the year in this corner of the Netherlands, and the ridges lie exposed to the wind. Around 800 volunteers put the race on; the 15 km sells out year after year.

Pacing Strategy

The race is decided in the first five kilometres. The climb is so even that it barely feels like a climb, and that is exactly the trap: running goal pace here means running well above goal intensity. Hold effort constant through this section and accept that the watch reads ten to twenty seconds per kilometre slower than the number you want at the finish.

The middle section along the Zevenheuvelenweg trades constantly between short rises and dips. It pays to leave the crests alone and take every descent instead. The decisive feature is the ramp just after kilometre ten: a good 600 metres touching seven percent, arriving straight off a descent on which it is easy to get carried away. Reach it with tired legs and you lose more time than the climb is long.

After that the course tips over. The final four kilometres fall from nearly 100 metres to 36: this is where the race is won. It only works if there is strength left at the top: four kilometres of downhill running loads the quadriceps hard, and in wet November leaf litter the surface is often slicker than it looks.

Fifteen kilometres means roughly one to one and a half hours for most age-group runners. It is a distance run close to threshold: high but controlled, with no built-in recovery. The elevation changes little about that, it only moves where the intensity swings.

Despite the loop shape the demand is very unevenly distributed. A third of the course rises, a third falls, and barely thirty percent is genuinely flat. So for over an hour the body has to keep switching between climbing rhythm, rolling pace and a long descent without letting heart rate run away.

Two phases decide the race: the long shallow climb to kilometre five and the short steep ramp at kilometre ten. The first asks for discipline and aerobic depth, the second for the ability to take on a six-to-seven percent rise after an hour of effort without losing rhythm. On top of that comes the closing descent, which demands eccentric durability.

In training that means threshold runs on gently rising ground, so that holding constant effort while the pace drops becomes second nature; short hard uphill intervals at the end of long sessions; and deliberate downhill running to prepare the quadriceps for four kilometres of falling road. Because the race is held in mid-November, sessions in cold, wet and windy conditions on exposed ground belong in the plan too; race day here is rarely mild.
