The Olympic distance at the Hyannis 1 Triathlon combines a swim in Nantucket Sound off Craigville Beach with two bike laps through the villages of Cape Cod's south shore and two run laps toward Hyannisport. The Hyannis races are billed as the longest-running triathlons in the East.
The start is a time-trial running start from the sand at Craigville Beach. You swim the 0.9 miles in two laps parallel to the shore, never more than about 100 yards out; in mid-June the water is usually in the high 60s to low 70s °F. There is a 30-minute cut-off for the first half-mile. Conditions over the years have ranged from glass-calm to a moderate chop.
After transition on the beach you ride the loop through Centerville, Osterville and Wianno twice, then run the 10 km with a U-turn at about 2.5 miles and a second circuit. The finish comes on the gently falling last mile back to Craigville Beach.
The organiser, New England Endurance Events, stages one of New England's largest relay competitions here, and the June race also hosts the USA Triathlon Massachusetts High School Championships. The beach is busy accordingly, with everyone from first-timers to elites.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

In the water a calm start pays: the time-trial start spreads the field, and a steady first lap keeps the half-mile cut-off comfortably in hand and brings you ashore relaxed.
The race is decided on the bike and on the second run lap. The bike course has no long climbs, so even power over two laps is what counts, and a slightly easier first lap keeps your legs fresh for the run.
The classic trap is starting the run too fast. The gentle climb comes after half a mile, and taking it too hard costs you on the second lap. Save your final push for the gently falling last mile.

Age-group athletes usually need 2:15 to 3:15 hours for the Olympic distance here. The effort is mostly steady and aerobic, with many short surges on the bike and a run made hard by the fatigue from the bike.
In the water, practise open-water swimming with buoy sighting and a running start from the beach, and swimming in light chop. On the bike, long threshold intervals on rolling roads help; on foot, brick runs straight off the bike.
Transitions are part of the race: practise the run up the beach to transition, getting out of your wetsuit and setting off on the bike with sandy feet.
With the race in mid-June and the water not yet at full summer warmth, schedule wetsuit open-water sessions early and train the run in the morning sun as well.
