The Hyannis 2 Triathlon is billed as the race that introduced triathlon to the US East Coast, and the Olympic distance is its longest format: two swim laps in the late-summer warmth of Nantucket Sound, two bike laps through the villages of Cape Cod's south shore and two run laps toward Hyannisport.
The swim is off the sand at Craigville Beach, where the water in September is almost always in the low 70s °F. The two laps are watched by a large team of certified open-water lifeguards and end at an arch just a few yards from the start, which makes the swim easy to follow for spectators. There is a 30-minute limit for the first half-mile.
The bike leg runs twice through Centerville, Osterville and Wianno on well-paved country roads with police-protected intersections, using Bay Lane as the link to the second lap. The 10 km run follows the Sprint run toward Hyannisport, U-turns at about 2.5 miles and covers the circuit a second time, finishing where it all started, at Craigville Beach.
The beach holds first-timers, age-groupers and elites alongside plenty of relay teams, and clubs compete in the Lobster Pot Challenge, a team contest held at both Hyannis races.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

The warm September water invites a fast start. Swim the first lap under control anyway: the half-mile limit is no issue for most, but an overcooked start is, because it costs you on the bike.
The race is settled in the second half of the day, on the second bike lap and the second run lap. Both repeat exactly what you already know, and they reward whoever kept something back the first time.
The trap is feeling that on a course with no climbs you can push everywhere. The many short swells on the bike and the early climb on the run add up; attack them every time and the second run lap comes out much slower.

Age-group athletes are usually out for 2:15 to 3:15 hours over the Olympic distance here. It is a mostly steady aerobic effort in two halves: two laps on the bike, two laps on the run.
In open water, practise lap swimming around turn buoys and the beach start. On the bike, long threshold intervals on rolling roads are the core; on foot, brick runs of 30 to 45 minutes.
Since each discipline asks for the same lap twice, it pays to repeat blocks in training and complete the second as fast as the first. Practise the run up the beach to transition and getting out of your wetsuit quickly, too.
The build falls in summer, so you can do plenty of open-water training. Test beforehand, in water in the low 70s °F, how your swim kit feels over 0.9 miles.
