The Olympic distance at the Lums Pond Triathlon is a fast race in Lums Pond State Park near Bear, Delaware: 1.5 km in the lake, three flat bike laps around the park and two shaded run laps by the shore. It doubles as the USA Triathlon Delaware State Championship and sold out last year.
The swim is in Lums Pond, about 200 acres and around 10 feet deep on average. The Olympic field swims two laps of a rectangular course and stays in the water to start the second. The start is a time trial, two athletes every few seconds. From the swim exit on the grassy beach it is about 250 m to transition.
The bike is three laps of the 6.7-mile loop around the park, all right-hand turns on good pavement with a dedicated lane on Route 301. After the third lap you turn right back into the park. Two 5 km run laps follow, half gravel and half pavement, mostly in the woods.
The day goes from open to shaded. The bike on open roads is exposed to the weather, while the run lies largely in shade. In August the organiser expects water in the mid-70s Fahrenheit, around 24 degrees Celsius; whether wetsuits are allowed depends on the official reading on race morning.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

The race is decided on the bike and on the second run lap, not in the water. The time trial start takes the crowding out of the swim; swim steadily, sight cleanly on the buoys, and use the 250 m to transition to settle your heart rate.
On the bike the biggest risk is over-investing on a flat, fast course because the speed feels easy. Ride all three laps at the same pace and keep track of the lap count. Ride the bike just below threshold and you can still pick it up in the shade of the run.
On the run, the first lap is for settling in and the second is for racing. With no aid on the bike, drink enough there that you do not start the run already in deficit.

Expect about 2:15 to 3:15 hours in total. It is a steady effort at the top of the aerobic range with no climbs, where rhythm and fuelling matter more than strength.
In the water, open-water sessions with buoy sighting help; the course is rectangular and calm, but without walls or lane ropes. Whether wetsuits are allowed depends on the water temperature on race morning, so make sure you can swim 1.5 km confidently without a wetsuit.
The main focus is riding on the aero bars for over an hour and running straight afterwards. Plan a weekly brick session that grows over time until you link 60 to 75 minutes on the bike at race effort with 30 to 40 minutes of running.
Prepare for heat. Train in warm conditions in the weeks before, practise drinking on the bike and plan how much fluid you carry, because there is no aid on the bike.
