The Long Course at the Kinetic Triathlon Festival is the first half-distance race of the Mid-Atlantic season: 1.9 km in Lake Anna, just over 90 km of rolling farm country and a half marathon that never leaves Lake Anna State Park. In May it shows early where your form stands.
The swim is one lap of a rectangular course with two turns from a sandy beach, with sighting buoys about every 75 m. In early May the water is around 18 degrees Celsius, so a wetsuit swim is all but certain. Starts are a time trial, one athlete at a time.
After a short run to transition come two bike laps on country roads between fields and pine forest, then three run laps in the park, each starting with the hill out of transition. The finish is beside the swimming beach in front of banked seating from which family and friends can watch the swim, the run course and the finish.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

The race is won or lost on the bike but settled on the run. Swim calmly and evenly, take the time in T1 to get onto the bike warm after the cool water, and ride the first lap below how you feel.
The second bike lap and the third run lap are where an aggressive start comes back to bite.
If you reach T2 with legs to run the hill out of transition evenly three times, you finish strong.

Expect roughly 5 to 7 hours in total. The effort is long and aerobic; the rollers on the bike and the hills in the park force changes of rhythm but ask for no real climbing ability.
The focus is bike endurance on the aero bars over rolling terrain, followed by brick runs that start with a climb.
Add open-water swimming in a wetsuit in cool water. The early-season date is the real challenge: most of the preparation falls in winter.
Plan your long sessions so your longest bricks are done in April, and test your fuelling over the full race duration.
