Manchester City Marathon.

The Manchester City Marathon is a certified Boston qualifier through New Hampshire's largest city, and its two halves could hardly be more different: a rolling city loop through the Millyard, the North End and Derryfield Park, then a flat stretch on the rail trails along the Piscataquog. Dose the hills of the first half well and you arrive on the trail with legs for an even finish.

Elliot Manchester City Marathon 2026: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The start is at 8:50 on Elm Street in front of Veterans Park, together with the half marathon and the relays. The first 13 miles are identical to the half: south via Wyoming Street and Calef Road, a slight rise on Mitchell Street and a sharp drop to the Riverwalk, past the Fisher Cats' stadium and through the historic Millyard. North River Road then runs past Stark Park, a stretch the organiser describes as rolling. Via Dorrs Pond, Belmont Street and a loop around Derryfield Park, the course returns downtown on Hanover Street.

Just after mile 13 the marathon turns right, crosses the Merrimack on the Bridge Street Bridge and runs through Rimmon Heights. At mile 16 it crosses the Piscataquog onto the Piscataquog Trail, and from here to the finish the organiser calls the course very flat: out on the rail trail, briefly onto Route 114 to the last relay exchange at mile 19, then via Henry Bridge Road onto the Goffstown Rail Trail, with a U-turn at mile 20, and back along the Piscataquog towards the city. Mile 22 brings the new Trestle bridge, then the footbridge over the Merrimack and the Notre Dame Bridge back to Elm Street.

The profile gathers about 400 metres of climbing, most of it in the first half and in the rise from the river to Elm Street in the final kilometre. There are 16 aid stations, with gels at Riverwalk Way, Dorrs Pond and the rail-trail turnaround. The time limit is seven hours, with checks at mile 13.1 at 12:10 and at mile 19.4 at 1:54 p.m.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Elliot Manchester City Marathon.

Start

Start under control

The first half costs more than its clock time shows. Between the drop to the Riverwalk, the rolling North River Road and the loop around Derryfield Park the terrain never settles, and running an even pace per mile here overspends on every rise. Run by effort, let the hills take some time from you and do not force it back on the descents.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The marathon is decided on the rail trail between miles 16 and 23. It is flat and quiet, with few spectators, and this is exactly where a first half run too fast shows. Use the turnaround at mile 20 as a check on your pace.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap waits at the end. After the flat miles by the river, the final kilometre climbs over the Notre Dame Bridge back up to Elm Street. Keep something for it instead of emptying yourself on the trail.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Elliot Manchester City Marathon: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Expect roughly 3:15 to 5:45 depending on ability; the time limit is seven hours. The effort is aerobic, but restless in the first half with many short rises and drops, then steady and flat in the second.

Core

Train race pace

The ability that decides it is holding marathon pace on the trail after 13 rolling miles. Long runs of 28 to 32 kilometres should therefore start on hilly ground and finish with marathon-pace blocks on the flat.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Train your downhill running too. The steep drop to the Riverwalk and the rollers on North River Road load the quads early, and the bill only arrives after mile 20. A short climb at the end of long runs prepares you for the way back up to Elm Street.

Race week

Arrive fresh

The race is held in November in New Hampshire. Test your kit for a cool morning and the wait at the start, and plan your fuelling around the stations, with gels at miles 4.2, 9.5 and 20.
