Triathlon Deauville Normandie.

The Longue Distance is the centrepiece of the Triathlon Deauville Normandie: a swim start from Deauville beach among its striped parasols, two hilly bike laps through the Pays d'Auge and a half marathon on the Planches to a finish facing the sea. Arriving well means riding the rolling bike leg in a way that still leaves a run for the flat seafront.

Triathlon Deauville Normandie 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The race starts in the Channel: 1.9 km as two 950 m loops with an Australian exit across the sand between them. In June the water usually sits between 16 and 20 degrees, so a wetsuit is strongly advised. The field goes off in a rolling start in small groups; only those aiming for the podium start with the elite in a mass start.

After transition on the boulevard Eugène Cornuché come 90 km on two identical laps that climb from sea level into the hinterland, among stud farms, thatched cottages and views back to the sea. Nothing out there is higher than about 120 m, but it is a constant up and down of short ramps of up to 16 percent, and the two laps add up to around 1,300 m of climbing. Drafting is forbidden; the gap is twelve metres.

The half marathon is the opposite: four laps of the Planches, Deauville's wooden beach boardwalk, flat and lined with spectators, to a finish right in front of the sea. Here the terrain decides nothing; what is left over from the bike does.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Triathlon Deauville Normandie.

Start

Settle into the race

The load is unevenly spread: the swim is short and in the sea, the run is flat, and the bike carries nearly all the climbing. Because the ramps are short and steep, each one invites a push. Riding every one of them above threshold builds fatigue over 90 km that only shows up on the Planches.

Mid-race

Spread the effort

The race is decided on the second bike lap. It is the same as the first, so after 45 km you know exactly what is coming; ride the first lap slightly on the defensive and hold your power on the second.

Finish

Finish strong

The four-lap half marathon then rewards an even pace controlled from the first lap, rather than letting the crowd on the boardwalk push you into a fast opening kilometre.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Triathlon Deauville Normandie: 12-week build

Base

Build all three disciplines

For age-group athletes the Longue Distance takes roughly five to seven hours, a long and mostly aerobic day. The 1.9 km swim is short but in open sea; the bike is defined by constant short changes of pace; the run is a flat half marathon on tired legs.

Core

Brick sessions

The key sessions are long rides over rolling terrain in which you ride short climbs at controlled power instead of attacking them. Pair them regularly with 30 to 60 minute runs so your run pace does not collapse off the bike.

Specific

Practise transitions

Transitions and the beach exit deserve practice of their own, as does riding on aero bars along winding roads. The sea is the factor many underestimate: train in open water before the race, get used to cooler water and a wetsuit, and practise sighting on buoys.

Race week

Arrive fresh

June on the Normandy coast can be windy, which you feel in the water and on the exposed stretches of the bike.
