The Triathlon L is the headline race of the Triathlon des Coteaux du Vendômois, held for the 30th time at the Plan d'eau of Villiers-sur-Loir in 2027. With a 2.3 km swim, two hilly bike laps through the Vendômois and some 20 km of running, it is a long-distance day decided by how you pace the bike.
The swim is in the Plan d'eau, a spring-fed former gravel pit with the Pavillon Bleu label, over two laps with a rolling start from the bathing beach. After 1,300 metres there is a short Australian exit across the beach before the second lap; transition sits right opposite the swim exit.
The bike covers a loop of a little over 48 km twice, through the countryside north and west of the Loir: a sequence of short climbs and descents on roads that stay open to traffic in the race direction. Drafting is not allowed. The organiser has not yet published the 2027 run course; in past editions it ran two laps on paths around the lake and through the surrounding woods and fields.
The race is held on Sunday, after a Saturday of sprint, Olympic and entry-level racing. Anyone doing the Vendoman challenge already has the S and the M in their legs.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
With a rolling start the swim is calm; use the first lap to find an even rhythm, and the Australian exit as a moment to breathe rather than a sprint across the sand.
The day is decided on the bike, and specifically on the second lap. The organiser itself warns against riding the first lap too fast, because the chain of small hills adds up and makes the run very hard. Climb seated with steady pressure and plan both laps at nearly the same speed.
On the run, what counts is what you saved on the bike. Start the first kilometres deliberately slower than planned and take something at every aid station; late-May afternoons can be warm.

Expect five to seven hours for the whole race. The effort is mostly long and aerobic, with many short spikes on the bike, and it asks above all for endurance, fuelling discipline and evenness.
On the bike, long rides over hilly terrain are the core: three to four hours with climbs ridden under control, plus two to four minute hill intervals. For the run, long runs of up to about 25 km and bricks after long rides prepare the second half of the day.
In the water, sessions that let you swim 2.5 to 3 km continuously are enough, ideally in open water in a wetsuit and sighting on buoys. Practise fuelling at race effort, since the two bike feed stations are almost 50 km apart.
A late-May race means a spring build: plan some long sessions in warmer weather so you know how much you need to drink.
