Berlin Corporate Run: Course, Route Profile & Map

With around 20,000 starters, the Berliner Firmenlauf is the capital's largest corporate run and it is held on a Wednesday evening: the start is on Ebertstrasse just south of the Brandenburg Gate, the finish on the Strasse des 17. Juni at the Soviet War Memorial. In between lie a little over five completely flat kilometres straight through the Tiergarten.

Course & Elevation

The course is not a closed loop. It begins about 100 metres south of the Brandenburg Gate on Ebertstrasse, drops via Lennestrasse into Tiergartenstrasse, turns south on Stauffenbergstrasse towards the Landwehrkanal and follows the Reichpietschufer westwards. Klingelhoeferstrasse takes it back north past the Bauhaus Archive, the Hofjaegerallee leads to the Grosser Stern roundabout at the Victory Column, and from there the Strasse des 17. Juni runs east to the finish.

Germany offers little that is flatter: the whole course sits between 35 and 42 metres above sea level, 17 metres of climbing accumulate in total, and more than seventy percent of the distance has no gradient at all. The surface is wide, closed Berlin city asphalt throughout. There is one ambiguity about the distance: the website says 5.5 kilometres, the official event guide says about 5, and the reconstructed street centreline measures 4,593 metres.

The evening is what really defines this race. The site opens at 15:00, is fully fenced and entered through bag checks; companies put up tents along the Strasse des 17. Juni. At 18:00 an international elite race, the maes.5k, is run on the same closed roads, then skaters, wheelchair users, unicyclists and handbikers go off, and finally runners and walkers in four blocks. There are deliberately no feed stations on course to avoid waste; fruit and water wait at the finish. The organiser is the non-profit events arm of SC Tegeler Forst, which puts the surplus into club and youth work.

Pacing Strategy

Five and a half flat kilometres give you no tactical structure, so you have to bring your own. Wide closed boulevards and a field of 20,000 create a pace that feels effortless in the first two kilometres and is not. Run the opening kilometre deliberately under target pace and only start working after Stauffenbergstrasse.

The only real structure is the pinch points: the transition from Ebertstrasse into Lennestrasse, the bend at the Landwehrkanal, and above all the Grosser Stern, where the course meets the roundabout at the Victory Column. In a field this dense, every overtake there costs more energy than time. Hold the effort steady and accelerate only on the broad Strasse des 17. Juni, where the last kilometre lies open in front of you.

The real trap is refreshment, or rather the absence of it. The organiser deliberately runs the course without a single feed station for environmental reasons. With a start between 19:15 and 20:00 on a May evening, after a full working day and often several hours of waiting on site, that is where most people arrive unprepared. Drink in good time before the start and plan for a long afternoon before the gun.

Training plan for Berlin Corporate Run: 12-week build

For most participants this race lasts between about 20 and 45 minutes. The demand is short and dense: a continuously high, even effort at or above threshold, with no relief from descents and no changes of pace from climbs. For many starters it is the only race of the year, and preparation should be built around exactly that.

If you are coming from a desk, base fitness matters most: three or four easy runs a week of 30 to 45 minutes form the foundation. On top of that, a single specific session per week is enough, for example five to eight repetitions of 600 to 1,000 metres at target race pace with full jog recovery. This distance needs no more than that.

The last kilometre on the Strasse des 17. Juni decides it, when the field opens out and your breathing is already at the limit. Rehearse that state by finishing some runs with three or four distinctly faster minutes rather than letting them fade out.

Conditions are the underestimated factor. The race falls on a Wednesday evening in late May, after a working day, with the site opening at 15:00, bag checks at the gates and start blocks running until 20:00. Train in the early evening rather than the morning, plan how you will eat and drink through the afternoon, and account for there being nothing to drink on course. The surface is hard city asphalt throughout, so part of your training belongs on the road too.
