SportScheck RUN Hannover: Course, Route Profile & Map

The 5 kilometres of the SportScheck RUN Hannover are a flat night lap through a completely closed city centre, starting and finishing on the Opernplatz. With not a single climb, what decides the race is purely how well you hold an even pace on setts and through tight corners.

Course & Elevation

The lap starts and finishes on the Opernplatz on Georgstraße, in the middle of a city centre closed to traffic for the evening. From there it first heads north along Georgstraße and Bahnhofstraße past the Kröpcke, then west into the old town and along the river Leine, before Karmarschstraße and Friedrichswall carry it south past the new town hall. Via the Aegidientorplatz and Georgstraße it runs back to the Opernplatz.

It is an emphatically flat course: Hanover's city centre lies between roughly 58 and 67 metres above sea level, and the lap gathers less than 20 metres of ascent. The surface is paved throughout but switches constantly between wide asphalt street and pedestrian-zone setts, and the routing is full of corners – a tight inner-city lap rather than one long straight.

The race is run in the evening and at night, on closed and floodlit streets between the opera house, the Kröpcke and the old town. Instead of a race number the official event shirt is the entry ticket, and timing is by shoe transponder. RUN and SpeedRUN follow the same course and differ only in the start wave.

Pacing Strategy

Five flat kilometres give you no natural structure – the pace has to be right from the gun. Set it in the first kilometre on the wide Georgstraße and accept that your splits in the old town will look slower without the effort dropping: setts and tight corners cost seconds that no gradient explains.

The race is decided between the old town and the Friedrichswall, where most of the direction changes are. Braking into every corner and re-accelerating out of it burns more than you think. Run the corners wide, look at the exit and accelerate early and gently rather than late and hard.

The trap is the night start: after a whole day and a late meal, the first metres feel easier in the excitement than they are. Two quiet opening kilometres and a full warm-up are worth more over this distance than any finishing sprint.

Training plan for SportScheck RUN Hannover: 12-week build

For an age-group runner the 5 kilometres take somewhere between 20 and 35 minutes depending on level. The effort is a short, continuously hard one at or just above threshold: there is no climb on which to save and no descent on which to recover.

The training focus is speed endurance on level, hard ground: intervals of 400 to 1,000 metres slightly faster than goal race pace, plus tempo runs of 20 to 30 minutes. This course has no need for hill work.

What it does additionally demand is cornering and the ability to change pace. A tight city lap with a dozen corners means constant braking and re-accelerating. Deliberately run some sessions on a twisting urban route rather than on the track, and add short surges of 20 to 40 seconds out of race pace.

Conditions: a late evening start in September, partly on smooth pedestrian-zone setts that turn slippery after a shower, and under artificial light. Move a few key sessions into darkness, test your shoe choice on wet paving, and plan the day's eating around a start after eight in the evening.
