Einbecker Bierstadtlauf: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Einbecker Bierstadtlauf is the race the whole event is named after and the last start of the day: a five kilometre loop through the half-timbered old town, away from the Marktplatz and back to it. There is next to nothing to climb, the entire loop sits inside an eight metre band, and a fast time comes only from holding pace from the first corner.

Course & Elevation

The course never leaves the town. It starts on the Marktplatz, turns its loop through the streets and lanes of the old town and comes back to the same point; the track measures 4.9 kilometres against the advertised 5.1, and the city states plainly that its courses are not officially certified. Two thirds of the loop sits in the flat gradient band, there is not one categorised climb, and the twenty-odd vertical metres are spread over a handful of street sections that barely register as rises.

What makes the race is the setting rather than the profile. Einbeck is a historic beer and half-timbered town in southern Lower Saxony, between the Solling and the Harz, and this loop runs straight through its core: start and finish on the Marktplatz, the Bambini races circling the Marktkirche, spectators packed in where the lanes narrow.

The 5.1 km is also the closing event of an afternoon programme that opens with the two Hube races and works through the walking course and the school races to the namesake run. It is a scoring race in the Südniedersachsen-Cup, open to teenagers and adults alike, and it carries a large share of the field: the most recent edition counted around 1,500 finishers across all distances.

Pacing Strategy

There is no climb on this loop to ration your effort for you. Two thirds of the distance is flat and the profile yields four vertical metres per kilometre across the whole course, so the Bierstadtlauf runs as one continuous effort at threshold. Fix your target pace before the gun and do not let the second half drift slower than the first.

The trap is the Marktplatz start. A dense, mixed field over a short distance drags the opening eight hundred metres out too fast, and across five kilometres there is no section where an over-hard start can be paid back.

The race is decided in the lanes. Tight corners and changing street widths cost speed at every change of direction if you take them on the brakes. Finding your line early and driving out of each corner, instead of letting the runner in front slow you down, wins more here than raw top-end speed does. The late start also means you set off after a warm May day, with the old town still holding the afternoon's heat.

Training plan for Einbecker Bierstadtlauf: 12-week build

Five kilometres on a flat town circuit means roughly twenty to thirty-five minutes of work for an age-group runner, depending on level. The character is high intensity throughout: no recovery section, no climb to regulate your pace for you, just a sustained effort at or slightly above the anaerobic threshold from the first minute.

Two things decide the race, and neither has anything to do with climbing strength. First the start: the field is mixed, the distance is short, and your opening speed determines whether the last two kilometres are still runnable. Second the old town corners, which demand a short re-acceleration again and again, so many small changes of pace inside an already hard continuous effort.

In training that means threshold runs of twenty to thirty minutes to make race pace sustainable at all, plus short intervals at maximum oxygen uptake over 400 to 1,000 metres for top-end speed. Add pick-ups from a slow rolling pace so the repeated accelerations out of the lanes cost you no more than they have to.

Conditions belong in the plan. The race is run in late May in the late afternoon, when the town still holds the day's warmth, and the surface is town street from start to finish. If your spring training happens only in cool morning air, put some of your faster sessions deliberately into the warm part of the day; and because the course is hard and even underfoot, break in your race shoes over at least one fast session first.
