Challenge Barcelona Triatló: Course, Elevation & Route Profile
The Middle Distance is the only race of the Challenge Barcelona Triatló that leaves the city: a 1.9 km sea swim off the Mar Bella, 88 km of non-drafting riding up the coast and back, then four laps of a half marathon on the promenade. Two things decide your preparation, a bike split that leaves the run intact and a nutrition plan you carry yourself.
Course & Elevation
The whole day starts and finishes in the Mar Bella beach park. You come out of the sea into a transition area that serves as both T1 and T2, your bike racked there since the day before. A link section leads out of Barcelona to Montgat, then two laps of the coast road towards Vilassar de Mar and the ride back into the city. Only the run returns you to the noise: four laps of the seafront promenade, finishing a few steps from the water the day began in.
What separates this distance from the two shorter ones is its rule set. Drafting is banned, only road bikes are permitted, and aid exists at the swim exit and on the run, nowhere else. The 88 km are therefore ridden alone and entirely on what you carry. On top of that sits a chain of time limits checked during the race, after the swim and again after the bike: arrive late into T2 and your half marathon does not happen.
The contrast between the segments is stark. The Mar Bella bay sits sheltered behind breakwaters, looking out along the city shoreline towards the Port Olímpic and the Parc del Fòrum. On the bike you then spend hours on the exposed coast, sea on one side, the suburban belt of Barcelona on the other. The run puts you back in the middle of everything: you share the promenade with the two later distances and with the October crowds.
Pacing Strategy
The way the day divides up is clear here. The swim costs little time but can ruin plenty, the bike is the longest segment and the only one you genuinely control, and the half marathon is where the bill arrives. Ride the 88 km to power rather than speed: with drafting banned, every attempt to hang onto a faster rider comes out of your own account.
The race is decided on the second coastal lap and the ride back into the city. Until then flat riding feels cheap, and that is where the watts go that go missing on run laps three and four. Plan to ride the closing part of the bike more conservatively than the opening, and keep eating and drinking even once your head is in transition.
The second trap is the cut-off structure. Because the limits are checked segment by segment, a laboured swim feels harmless while it has already eaten your buffer for the rest of the day. Work the limits backwards beforehand and treat arriving into T2 as a hard marker, not a feeling. On a flat run course with no forced change of rhythm, nobody wins back time left on the bike.
Training plan for Challenge Barcelona Triatló: 12-week build
For an age-group athlete the day runs to roughly five to seven and a half hours. The demand stays remarkably uniform across all of it: a long open-water swim, an even longer time trial with no group dynamics, and a half marathon with no meaningful changes of rhythm. Train mostly short and hard and you are preparing for a different race than this one.
What decides it is the ability to still run economically after hours of steady riding. That does not follow from separate bike and run sessions; it comes from brick work in which the run follows a genuinely long, evenly ridden effort. Schedule few of those, but make them realistic in length.
Because there is no aid station on the bike, your own fuelling is a training topic in its own right. Rehearse race nutrition several times exactly as you will carry it, including drinking from your own bottles at race pace. Add long intervals just under threshold ridden in race position: with drafting banned, your position on the bike is the biggest single time gain available to you on this course.
Conditions come down to the sea and the time of day. Whether wetsuits are mandatory, optional or banned is decided by the officials on the morning itself from water and air temperature, so swim both ways in training and be able to sight on buoys in salt water. The start is early, you climb onto a bike that has stood in transition overnight, and you then run the half marathon in the warmest part of the day: rehearse the cool early start as well as running in heat, and settle your clothing decision before the race rather than in transition.
