Fränkische Schweiz-Marathon Training Plan & Preparation

The Fränkische Schweiz-Marathon runs entirely on the closed B470 federal road through the Wiesent valley, past the crags, castles and villages of Franconian Switzerland. Don't let the flat opening fool you: after ten level kilometres the road tilts steadily up the valley, and 510 metres of climbing need to be rationed with care.

Course & Elevation

The race starts and finishes in Ebermannstadt and never leaves the car-free B470 — an out-and-back with two turnarounds rather than a loop. The first ten kilometres head out to Weilersbach and back on essentially level road. From kilometre 11 the course turns up the valley towards Muggendorf and Behringersmühle, climbing in waves: short ramps of 300 to 400 metres at 3.5 to 4.3 percent come at kilometres 11.3, 15.1, 16.2 and 19.3.

The hardest stretch waits between kilometres 24.5 and 27 — first a ramp that briefly hits 12.3 percent, then the longest climb of the day, 430 metres at 5.5 percent, up to the course's high point of around 350 metres just before the turnaround at Behringersmühle. The way home is a net descent but never free: two final counter-ramps at kilometres 37.2 and 39.3 stand between you and the finish, which sits at exactly the same altitude as the start.

Only a third of the course is flat; the rest splits almost evenly between gentle up and gentle down, with barely any steep ground. Tens of thousands of spectators and a festival atmosphere in the villages carry you along.

Pacing Strategy

The classic mistake here happens in the first hour. The opening ten kilometres to Weilersbach and back are flat and fast, and anyone running personal-best pace on them pays twice once the road tilts upward. Set your plan around even effort rather than even splits: from kilometre 11 on, losing a few seconds per kilometre on the ramps is part of the plan, not a warning sign.

The race is decided between kilometres 24.5 and 27 — the steepest pitch on the course followed immediately by the longest climb to the high point. Arrive there with reserves and the second half becomes what the profile promises: a net descent.

Let the road pull you home without forcing the cadence, and keep something back for the two counter-ramps at kilometres 37 and 39 — short, but they land on tired legs. After that the road falls gently all the way into Ebermannstadt.

12-Week Preparation

Depending on your level, plan for three and a half to five hours of running for the 42.2 kilometres and 510 metres of climbing. The demand is steadily aerobic — no climb on this course forces anaerobic spikes — but two thirds of the distance is gently up or down, so your stride has to absorb constant rhythm changes rather than settle into one gear.

The race-defining sections are the long up-valley stretch between kilometres 11 and 27 with its repeated short ramps, and the counter-ramps at kilometres 37 and 39 that hit on fatigued legs. Build your preparation around exactly that: long runs on rolling terrain rather than flat paths, ideally with the climbing loaded into the second half so you practise going uphill tired. Thread short rises into marathon-pace runs and rehearse settling straight back onto goal pace over the top — that skill decides this course.

Downhill running belongs in the plan too: the second half drops a net 50 metres, and quads conditioned for eccentric load turn that into free speed instead of heavy-legged survival. Add general strength work for trunk and legs, use your long runs to rehearse fuelling at regular intervals, and consider a rolling half marathon four to six weeks out as a dress rehearsal.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself — length and gradient — regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
