The Olympic distance at the Heidelberg Triathlon is a mountain race in short-course clothing. The 36-kilometre bike course crosses the Königstuhl twice for around 880 metres of climbing, and the closing 10K climbs again onto the Philosophenweg. Together that is a good 1,060 metres across bike and run — far more than a short-course triathlon usually asks.

Course & Elevation

The day opens with 1.6 kilometres in the Neckar. The start is east of the Alte Brücke, running downstream past the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke to an exit directly at the transition zone on the Neckarwiese. The current does part of the work, and fast swim splits are the rule here.

After that the bike sets the character of the race. A flat kilometre along the northern bank leads over the Alte Brücke into the old town, with cobbles and tight corners, and then up through the Klingentor onto a roughly 14-kilometre, largely wooded circuit over the Königstuhl. That circuit is ridden twice, counter-clockwise; each lap rises from about 110 metres at the river to a good 545, averaging just under four percent with ramps to fourteen. Only a fifth of the bike course is flat and a good quarter falls steeper than four percent, so the descents are quick.

The closing ten-kilometre run starts climbing barely 500 metres out of transition, a sharp ramp straight onto the Philosophenweg, and then runs just under five kilometres more or less uphill to a turnaround at around 275 metres. The way back to the Neckarwiese is largely the same road, part asphalt, part firm forest path, and shaded for much of its length.

Pacing Strategy

The load on this course is distributed very unevenly. On the bike only about twenty percent is flat, nearly half climbs and the rest descends — there is essentially no stretch where a steady rhythm settles in. So plan the bike around a target intensity on the climbs rather than a target speed, and use the fast descents deliberately to recover rather than to press.

The race is decided on the second ascent of the Königstuhl. Both laps cost the same 430 metres or so, but you ride the second with the best part of an hour of climbing in your legs and with a hilly 10K still to come. Being able to keep pedalling evenly there, rather than merely surviving, wins more time than any descent.

The classic trap is the Bergwertung above the Klingentor: eighty vertical metres at over ten percent, on the first lap, with a prize on offer as an invitation to empty yourself into it. On a course carrying 880 metres of bike climbing, that effort costs far more later than it gains at the time. Keep the reserve on the bike that still lets you run — rather than walk — the first kilometre of the run, which climbs steeply onto the Philosophenweg immediately.

12-Week Preparation

Expect somewhere between two and a half and three and a half hours of racing depending on your level. The effort is not steady but clearly split in two: long climbing stretches well above endurance intensity, broken by fast, technical descents that ask for concentration rather than power.

The decisive sections are the two Königstuhl laps, a good 430 metres of climbing each, and the ascent onto the Philosophenweg at the start of the run. Both demand strength uphill at a point when the body is already tired — and the run additionally demands the ability to go straight from transition into a steep ramp.

On the bike, long threshold intervals therefore belong at the centre of training, ridden as ten- to twenty-minute climbs on real terrain rather than as flat blocks. Add short strength-endurance efforts for the pitches to fourteen percent, and add descending practice: a good quarter of the bike course falls steeper than four percent, and hesitating there costs more time than extra watts uphill will earn.

For the run, hill running and brick sessions are the key building block, ideally with the climb in the opening minutes, exactly as the course places it. Practise the way back too, since five kilometres of descent land on tired quadriceps. Add open-water work with sighting in a current and a start in a dense field.
